Spurs vs Clippers NBA Preview
San Antonio continues to hold out hope of overtaking Oklahoma City for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. The Spurs currently have a league-best 10-game unbeaten streak, winning eight of those games by a double-digit margin.
You could argue the Spurs are the most complete team in the West, considering they're the only side that ranks in the top four for both offensive (118.6) and defensive efficiency (110.1).
Spurs' center Victor Wembanyama continues to impact games on both ends of the floor. The Frenchman posted back-to-back 40-point efforts while grabbing 15+ rebounds with three blocks in each game.
Wembanyama already has eight blocks in his two games against the Clippers this season.
One of the most fascinating things about the Spurs is watching how players on opposing teams constantly scan for Wembanyama's presence before they even consider taking a shot.
As a result, look for the Clippers to be judicious with their shot selection in an effort to try and control the game as best as possible.
With the Clippers being at home, they should have a better chance to control the tempo. Los Angeles plays at the third-slowest pace in the league, averaging 97.1 possessions per 48 minutes.
Fewer possessions could limit the Spurs' second-chance opportunities. In the two meetings this season, San Antonio out-rebounded Los Angeles 37-19 on the offensive glass.
Interestingly, Wembanyama accounted for only four of those offensive boards, highlighting that the collective is indeed greater than the sum of its parts.
Los Angeles narrowly lost those games by a combined eight points, despite at one point blowing leads of 25 and 14 points. Therefore, this double-revenge spot could have some value with the Clippers catching 4.5 points as underdogs.
Spurs vs Clippers Predictions, Betting Analysis
We're starting to see the market react to this point spread, with one sportsbook even adjusting its line as low as 3.5, as Los Angeles takes money. This line move prompted me to do some digging, and I found that underdogs of no more than 4.5 points in a double-revenge spot following losses by a margin of four or fewer points are 107-94-3 (53.2%) against the spread (ATS) historically.
However, the Spurs are playing at such a high level that their A-game is often too much for opponents to cope with. Therefore, I prefer to pivot to the total, because San Antonio will be on short rest after playing on Wednesday night.
The Spurs are 10-4 ATS in this spot but 8-6 to the under — and if we revisit our earlier trend of underdogs using the same defined parameters, teams in this spot are a perfect 6-0 to the under.
After running the numbers, my model puts the total closer to 228.5, and with 231.5 still available at FanDuel, the under offers the best value in this matchup.
