Lehigh vs Army College Basketball Betting Preview

Lehigh Basketball

Lehigh comes into this one winners of five of its last six games in Patriot League play.

Nasir Whitlock has averaged 27 points per game over his last four outings, and the hot shooting of Edouard Benoit and Joshua Ingram has allowed Lehigh to outscore its opponents on a nightly basis.

If the outside shots are falling, Lehigh is going to be a dangerous out for anybody in the Patriot League, but the Mountain Hawks have also been quite streaky. If those shots aren’t falling, the offense will stall out, as offensive rebounds are nearly non-existent, as are second-chance points.

Defensively, the Mountain Hawks lack a ton of size or physicality on the block. Lehigh can get eaten up on the boards, and it struggles to defend the paint.

This problem usually manifests itself in the non-conference portion of the schedule while facing more athletic and talented opponents.

The complexion and makeup of the Patriot League teams are similar, so the issues are really only evident against opponents with strong athletic post players, of which their next opponent — Army — is not.

Army Basketball

Army has struggled to an 8-13 start, and those struggles have continued since the Black Knights entered the conference portion of their schedule.

Army is just 2-6 in the Patriot League, and as the schedule plays out, this is looking less and less likely to be the first Army team to reach the NCAA Tournament, a feat it has never achieved.

The offense runs through junior guard Ryan Curry, who leads the Black Knights in scoring while averaging 15 points per game. Jackson Furman and Jacen Holloway each average 10 points per game, while Jaxson Bell scores 11.4 while coming off the bench.

Army is another Patriot League team that lacks a strong interior and is very reliant on burying the triple. The Black Knights shoot the 3-pointer more than nearly any team in the country, and if those 3s are falling, Army can be a tough out.

The Army defense struggles to defend the post and is giving up made field goals at a rate of 58%, placing the Black Knights in the bottom 30 of college basketball.

There just isn't a ton of size in the paint, so blocking shots and protecting the rim are always going to be constant challenges for Army. This season is no different.

Lehigh vs. Army Betting Analysis

I like the over here.

The first meeting between these two saw Army come away with an 85-78 win in overtime in Bethlehem, PA. The game featured 60 combined free-throw attempts, and even with a 13-of-44 combined effort from 3-point range, it still saw 163 combined points.

I would expect the 3-point shots to be flying in this game, and Army has shot the basketball better at home this season than on the road. While Army hasn’t been pumping out the wins with regularity, the Black Knights have been competitive thanks to hot shooting, which should keep them in this game.

Lehigh will be able to create off the drive and stress the Army defense, which should result in trips to the foul line or “and-1” opportunities.

The Mountain Hawks' offense has been much more efficient and higher scoring since entering league play, and I expect that to continue here.

This should be a fun game, and I expect it to be higher scoring.

My Pick: Over 144.5 (Play to 149.5)
