Wisconsin vs TCU College Basketball Betting Preview
Wisconsin has shown that it'll run with teams that want to speed up the tempo and slow it down with teams that play at a slower tempo.
I'm not convinced that the Badgers are going to remain an up-tempo offense, and Friday’s game will be a good test to the theory.
This is a quick turnaround, as both teams are playing back-to-back days. That's something Wisconsin hasn't done in the regular season since 2023.
While TCU has played in some higher-tempo games this season, its opponents have been the major driver in the early-season tempo. Early-season games with New Orleans, Sant Francis, Kansas City and Florida have, in my opinion, inflated TCU’s adjusted tempo metric.
Jamie Dixon slowed the tempo way down against Michigan earlier this month, and I could see a similar game plan in this affair.
The Wisconsin offense is very prolific, as the Badgers rank 17th nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency. Nick Boyd and John Blackwell are shooting and making a ton of shots, and Nolan Winter is averaging a double-double this season.
Since the season-opening loss against New Orleans, TCU has been excellent at defending the rim and blocking shots. The Horned Frogs are excellent at defending without fouling, and Dixon can draw up a game plan to limit this Badgers offense.
Part of that game plan will likely involve slowing the pace a bit. TCU just played a high-scoring, high-possession game against Florida, but I suspect we see it lean on its defense to set the tone in this matchup.
I don’t think TCU can count on an offensive explosion from Jace Posey or Brock Harding again. Also, defensively, Wisconsin will get you deep into the possession clock and force lower-percentage shots.
Some of those low-percentage shots went in for TCU in the upset of Florida, but it's not sustainable long term.
I think both coaches slow the pace down in this one, and we see these defenses impact the game.
Given prior results, I would've expected this total to open a bit higher. But in a neutral environment and seeing both of these teams play in track meets the day before, I think we get a different style here.
This is a tough bet to make in a Wisconsin game, but I like the under, and I plan to bet half a unit on it.
My Pick: Under 155.5 (Play to 152.5)
