Texas vs Arkansas College Basketball Betting Preview
Texas Basketball
It's been a very up-and-down season for the Longhorns, who enter Wednesday night’s contest with a 17-12 overall record and are currently on the bubble.
Leading the charge for Texas’ offense is Dailyn Swain, who's posting over 18 points per game while converting on over 50% of his field goal attempts. Swain is an elite two-way player, as he boasts incredible length and size at the guard position.
Alongside Swain, Tramon Mark and Jordan Pope headline an extremely athletic and versatile Longhorn backcourt. Mark and Pope are both posting 13 points per contest, rounding out an impressive starting five for Sean Miller.
It's no surprise that Mark is an exceptional defender, with his former coach at Houston — Kelvin Sampson — instilling high-effort defensive principles.
A deeper look into the numbers reveal that the Longhorns' offense is amongst the most efficient in the nation, ranking sixth in offensive efficiency rating, per KenPom.
Miller’s bunch hasn't had the same luck on the other end of the floor. While 7-foot Lithuanian center Matas Vokietaitis has been an excellent rim protector for the Longhorns, the defense is allowing its opponents to score 78 points per game.
For a Texas team with a legitimate two-way big — along with several perimeter guards boasting a ton of length and size — it's inexcusable that this defensive unit ranks outside the top 120 nationally.
Arkansas Basketball
Arkansas’ first season under Hall of Fame head coach John Calipari ended devastatingly, with the Razorbacks blowing a 16-point second-half lead to Texas Tech in last season's Sweet 16.
In his second season at the helm, Coach Cal’s bunch is right on track to receive back-to-back tournament bids. The Razorbacks have posted an impressive 8-3 record over their last 11 contests, meaning they're getting hot at the perfect time.
Calipari had a massive offseason recruiting-wise, landing two top-10 prospects in Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas.
Acuff is on a tear, posting over 22 points per game. Over his last 10 contests, the freshman phenom is averaging an incredible 26 points per night.
Acuff has proved to be not just one of the best freshmen in the country, but one of the best overall players.
Alongside Acuff, Thomas is also having himself quite the freshman campaign, scoring over 15 points a night. He's a fantastic 3-point shooter, converting on over 40% of his attempts from deep.
The freshman duo leads an Arkansas offense that ranks second in college basketball, scoring over 90 points per game.
The Razorbacks have been unbelievably efficient on the offensive end of the floor, ranking fourth in the country in offensive efficiency, per KenPom.
However, Arkansas hasn't been equally as efficient on the other end of the floor, just barely ranking inside the top 50 in the nation in defensive efficiency rating. The Razorbacks' defense is allowing opponents to score 78 points of offense per contest.
Texas vs. Arkansas Betting Analysis
We're in for a fantastic matchup featuring two SEC offenses that rank inside the top 10 in the country. While Calipari’s Razorbacks have cemented their status as a tournament team, the Longhorns have far more to play for.
I expect Miller’s offense to put a ton of points on the board. However, I have concerns about its play on the other end of the floor, as this Longhorns defensive unit has been atrocious.
Altogether, I'll be backing Arkansas on the first-half spread, banking on the Hogs getting out to a hot start at home. Also, I'll throw their moneyline in a couple of parlays.
My Pick: Arkansas 1H -4 | Arkansas ML -370
