Wichita State vs USF College Basketball Betting Preview

We’ve got the top two seeds facing off in the American for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Neither of these teams will go dancing without securing this automatic bid, so this should be an awesome battle.

South Florida smoked Charlotte 86-64 in their semifinal matchup, their 10th win in a row.

Wichita handled an electric Tulsa offense in their semifinal matchup, winning 81-68. The Shockers are almost as hot as the Bulls. Wichita’s only loss since February 1st came vs their championship opponent.

South Florida’s offense is purely electric. The Bulls are sixth nationally in points per game at 87.6. Nate Oats disciple Bryan Hodgson has implemented a modern NBA style with elite spacing and a high-quality shot diet. USF is also sixth nationally in offensive rebounding rate.

While this group’s offense is the headliner, it’s also the most efficient defense in the American Conference, per KenPom.

Wichita is rock-solid on both ends, ranking fourth in the American in offensive efficiency and third in defensive efficiency. The Shockers are an even better offensive rebounding team than the Bulls (fourth-best nationally).

These teams played twice in the regular season. Wichita took down the Bulls on the road 86-85 in overtime back in mid-January, then lost a lower-scoring game 66-58 at home a month later.

The Shockers have proven their ability to play the best team in the conference really tough. To beat them on the road and to hold them to 66 points shows they were really able to make USF uncomfortable, and that the Bulls don’t have a clear advantage.

It’s worth mentioning that Hodgson seems to be actively deciding between the Providence and Syracuse jobs for next season. Could that be a distraction? Potentially, but that’s not something I’m really putting weight into.

USF has an awesome team culture, plus it’s a senior-led roster anyway. And I’d assume underclassmen rotation players would be invited to join him at his next stop.

To boil it down, South Florida has been the better team all year and feels destined to make the NCAA Tournament. They’ve hit another gear as of late, even since that 8-point road win at Wichita a month ago.

I’ll lay it with the Bulls, who I expect to control this one and punch their ticket to the dance.

My Pick: USF -5.5
