There will be no Tysons Corner casino in Virginia. At least for now.
Tysons Corner in Fairfax County, Virginia, is known for its bustling business centers and upscale shopping, but a recent plan to add a casino to the mix now seems dead in the water. In an unexpected twist, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger recently vetoed Senate Bill 756, which would have allowed local residents to vote on whether or not they wanted a casino in their neighborhood.
The bill sought community approval for a grand casino as part of a large development. This development would cover approximately 1.5 million square feet and be located near a Silver Line Metro station in Tysons.
Besides the permanent casino, there was also talk of a temporary one while the main venue was under construction.
Why Did It Get Vetoed?
The governor's decision came after hearing strong objections. Both the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and many local residents opposed the idea unless strict rules were put in place.
They were worried that the state forcing a referendum could weaken local decision-making power. Opponents also feared the negatives that could come with a casino, including:
- Increased traffic
- Crime
- Pressure on Local Schools and Housing
Tysons is already a prominent business area with Fortune 500 companies, and many feel a casino doesn’t fit in.
On the other side, supporters, including some labor groups, were excited about the jobs, tax revenue, and entertainment the casino could bring. They also believed it would help Tysons compete with nearby casinos like MGM National Harbor.

What's Next For The Tysons Corner Casino Plan?
For now, the veto has halted all progress on the casino plans.
The Virginia General Assembly is set to meet again on April 22, 2026, but chances of a change are slim due to strong local resistance. If the casino project were to proceed, it would likely need new legislation altogether.
Previous attempts to pass similar bills from 2023 to 2025 also ended in failure or delays, and local leaders remain confident that Tysons is successful enough without a casino.
