New York Giants Betting Preview: Resting the Starters

We don’t know exactly who’ll be suiting up for the Giants on Saturday, but head coach John Harbaugh gave us a little clue by saying that “certain guys got enough work,” after the joint practice on Thursday.

Reading between the lines, it’s safe to assume that starters will be rested, with only those in positional battles, or potentially the rookies, playing.

That would likely mean no Jaxson Dart, and that Jameis Winston and Brandon Allen would split time, in what is one of the more experienced sets of backups in the league.

In terms of the skill positions, we’re unlikely to see the team’s superstars. That said, third-round rookie Malachi Fields is one worth watching.

The big question comes at running back — with the team recently picking up Najee Harris, could he play a part here? Surprisingly, he got reps in Thursday’s joint practice, which indicates he has a chance of playing.

Miami Dolphins Betting Preview: A Brutal Showing

Malik Willis completed 4-of-5 attempts in the defeat to the Commanders last week, and he is reported to have struggled in the joint scrimmage.

We also haven't received any word from head coach Jeff Hafley as to who will play, but given that the Dolphins were embarrassed at practice, you’d think that he might give his first-stringers a little bit of time on the field.

The drop-off behind Willis is pretty stark. Cam Miller only completed 3-of-11 pass attempts and Quinn Ewers only managed to go 1-of-8.

Those are pretty terrible numbers and both combined only had one fewer interception (three) than they had complete passes (four). Ewers himself is questionable for this game, which would mean fourth-stringer Mark Gronowski getting playing time.

The offensive line was a particular issue in that joint practice, which led to Austin Jackson being ejected after throwing a punch. The Dolphins need to do better here and there’s potentially an opening for any second- or third-stringers who stand up well against the Giants’ pass rush.

There are reasons for optimism with rookie wideout Caleb Douglas looking good in practice against the Giants, following a great debut in that game against the Commanders.

Giants vs Dolphins Prediction, Betting Analysis

Usually the prospect of the Dolphins potentially playing starters, even if just for a little while, would have me backing them, especially with the points too. However, there are three main reasons why we have to back the Giants here.

Firstly, the Harbaugh effect. With the Giants' new head coach having an impressive 48-17 moneyline record in preseason, I feel good backing them.

Secondly, the Giants have the experience. Their quarterback duo can manage their second-stringers through this game, far more than what we saw from either Dolphins QB in their defeat to the Commanders.

And finally, that preseason performance from Miami was a concern, but just as worrying were reports from the joint practice, which saw the Dolphins struggle on both sides of the ball.

Everything is pointing to Big Blue getting a second straight preseason win and continuing to keep the good vibes going at Hard Rock Stadium.

Pick: Giants -3.5
