Steelers vs Chargers Spread Prediction
Last week was a great Rah Rah Mike Tomlin spot. I knew it, but I sat it out anyway, and the Steelers came through with their best game of the season with a win over the Colts. The Steel Curtain finally showed up, dominating what had been the league's best offensive line and forcing six turnovers.
Now, they get to play the Chargers, who are on pretty much the other end of the spectrum of offensive lines.
Los Angeles lost Rashawn Slater before the season, and now Joe Alt is out for the year. That's the league's best tackle duo missing, along with big-ticket free agent G Mekhi Becton and swing tackle Bobby Hart.
This Chargers line is in shambles, bottom five in the league (and five is probably being kind), and now it has to find answers against T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Alex Highsmith, and Nick Herbig — one of the most talented defensive fronts in the league.
Since drafting Alt, the Chargers are 15-5 straight up (SU) when he plays at least half the snaps but 2-5 without him. This team has already been struggling to run the ball without its top two running backs; Justin Herbert will likely be under pressure all night.
Meanwhile, L.A.'s run defense looks like the weakest unit on the field. It ranks 27th by DVOA and Pittsburgh has run the ball very well this year, top five by DVOA with Jaylen Warren getting most of the work and excelling in Arthur Smith's scheme.
Aaron Rodgers has also been at his best when he can get the ball out quickly, and the Chargers don't offer much pressure.
On top of all that, Pittsburgh should have a huge special teams advantage. And don't overlook the fact that the Steelers could even end up with something of a home-field advantage at SoFi Stadium, where Chargers fans are sparse and Steeler fans show up in drives with their Terrible Towels.
It's always a good idea to consider backing Tomlin as an underdog. He's 54-24-1 against the spread (ATS) as an underdog from Week 5 forward (68%) — though this is not a home game, not in the division and not after a big loss — things that usually make for a better Rah Rah spot.
It does fit another trend though.
When Tomlin is an underdog immediately after winning outright as a 'dog, the Steelers are an incredible 20-5-2 ATS, covering 80% of the time and winning the last eight such meetings outright!
Pick: Steelers +3 (-118)
Steelers vs Chargers Over/Under Pick
The Steelers defense came alive in what was undoubtedly their best performance of the season last week against the Colts. Their pass rush generated 19 total quarterback pressures and four sacks. Alex Highsmith led the way with four pressures of his own and T.J. Watt wasn’t far behind.
Against a Chargers offensive line missing left tackle Joe Alt, we could see a repeat performance from a Steelers group that just now may be hitting its stride.
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert averages 8.3 yards per attempt this season with Alt in the lineup versus just 6.5 yards per attempt with Alt sidelined.
Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers offense may seem like they are playing well, ranking 14th in DVOA, but I am not convinced their performance is sustainable. Pittsburgh is +50 in points off turnovers, greatly contributing to much of the scoring it has done this season.
Furthermore, the Steelers are just 21st in yards per play and they have failed to gain a first down on 42% of their offensive possessions, the highest rate in the league.
With the Chargers defense playing two-high safeties at one of the league’s highest rates, they are committed to keeping everything in front of them.
The Steelers already struggle to sustain drives, and the Chargers are going to force them to do just that in this game.
Pick: Under 45; bet to Under 44
Steelers vs Chargers Player Props: Justin Herbert
Justin Herbert got his first non-passing touchdown of the season last week, which is surprising considering that he's already tallied 305 rushing yards and has 10 red-zone carries thus far.
Herbert has been running the ball a ton, and without Joe Alt in the lineup for the rest of the season, he's likely going to have to use his legs even more.
The Steelers have given up three rushing TDs to QBs and got crushed by Justin Fields, the only mobile QB they've faced this season.
I have the true odds on Herbert to score a touchdown around +450.
Pick: Justin Herbert Anytime Touchdown Scorer (+650)
Steelers vs Chargers Player Props: Quentin Johnston
By Grant Neiffer
Quentin Johnston is enjoying a breakout year with the Chargers, and he's arguably been the best WR in this offense.
Johnston has six TDs in eight games played, and while he's generally a deep threat, he's had a high nine red-zone targets. The Chargers' offensive line is a bit beat up right now with Joe Alt out for season, but the Chargers are still formidable and they have been passing at one of the highest rates in the league.
I have the true odds on Johnston to score around +200.
Pick: Quentin Johnston Anytime Touchdown Scorer (+260)
Steelers vs Chargers Futures Pick
By Brandon Anderson
It's me again, with one more pick for those interested in fading the Chargers not just tonight — but for the rest of the season.
If the Chargers lose tonight, they're suddenly up against it with the Jaguars up next, with both opponents key competitors in the AFC wild card race.
I recommended Chargers to miss the playoff at +225 (BetRivers) as my Extra Point in this week's Pick Six, and that works as a great escalator to a Steelers win here.
Entering tonight's game, the Chargers seem like a safe playoff team at 6-3, but they could be 6-5 and on the wrong side of two key tiebreakers very quickly. There's also road division games in Kansas City and Denver, along with the Eagles, Texans and Cowboys.
It's really hard to see the Chargers coming back from these offensive line injuries. Those cluster injuries can bring an entire offense down, and the wrong missed block at the wrong time could also put Herbert on the sidelines and end things for good.
Pick: Chargers to Miss Playoffs (+225)
