The college football world spent most of the season waiting for the other shoe to drop when it came to the Wahoos. Surely, a team that started 11-23 under Tony Elliott in his first three seasons couldn’t really compete for an ACC title, right? Some call it luck, others call it being clutch, but what we know is that Virginia is nails in tight ball games. The Cavaliers won three straight games this season by three points or less. Their only loss since early September came by seven to Wake Forest in a game in which Chandler Morris, UVA’s QB1, was knocked out with a head injury. In games that Morris has started and finished, UVA is 10-1 with its lone blemish coming to NC State in a shootout, 35-31. Duke, meanwhile, backed its way into the ACC Title Game on the fifth tiebreaker (combined win percentage of ACC opponents). The Blue Devils went 3-3 down the stretch, allowing 29 points per game to their final six opponents. And in their head-to-head meeting with this very same Virginia team, the Blue Devils got blasted 34-17 while being outgained by 285 yards. At one point in the fourth quarter, it was 31-3 UVA. Simply put, it was one of the worst beatdowns the ACC produced all season long. Sportsbooks are giving the Blue Devils a puncher’s chance because of their offense and Darian Mensah. When they protect him, he’s a big play triggerman. Duke finished 11th in big play creation, with 31 plays of 30+ yards from scrimmage (3rd-most in the ACC). So, how did UVA slow them down in their first meeting? With a nasty pass rush (4 sacks) and great situational playcalling by defensive coordinator John Rudzinski. Duke was just 4-for-15 on third downs, and the Blue Devils turned it over on downs twice, including once inside the UVA ten-yard line. I’ll bank on a repeat performance in Charlotte from the Cavs.

Virginia Cavaliers 2025 Season Preview

The Virginia Cavaliers will look to improve in the 2025 football season following an 11-23 start under head coach Tony Elliot over the course of the last three seasons. While Elliott's Virginia tenure has started slow, a two-win leap in the 2024 season from 2023 and 2022 seasons could be a sign of good things to come.

Quarterback Chandler Morris is now playing for his fourth school, but he had a strong 2024 season (31 passing touchdowns), which should give the Cavaliers some hope. The wide receiver room is unproven and inexperienced, while reshirt junior running back Xavier Brown should become the lead back this year after averaging 6.1 yards per carry last season.

Defense was a major issue for the Cavaliers last season. They ranked near the bottom in scoring defense and surrendered over 400 total yards per game. The Cavaliers need to generate more sacks as well, as just one player had more than 2.5 sacks last season (linebacker Kam Robinson).

While the Virginia Cavaliers may face some hurdles, the program has a history of turning things around under previous head coaches, including Bronco Mendenhall and Al Groh. The team will strive to improve their recent seasons and work towards contention in the ACC, which is a conference that's not packed with dominant programs currently.

Virginia Cavaliers Point Spreads

Betting on the spread is a common way to bet on college football, and it involves betting against a sportsbook prediction of the margin of victory. It could look like this:

  • Virginia +4.5 (-110)
  • Boston College -4.5 (-110)

Virginia is an underdog here, denoted by the plus sign, while the Eagles are the favorites, shown by the minus sign. If the underdog loses by less than the spread (or wins outright), they “cover,” which means bets on them win. Boston College would have to win by more than the spread, in this case, five or more points, for bets to win.

Virginia Cavaliers Over/Unders

When you aren’t confident which team will win the game but expect a shootout, you could bet the over on an over/under bet.

Over/under, or totals, bets are wagers on the total scoring in a game. As an example of a game from the past, with a 55-point total in Virginia's game against Tennessee, the 49-13 final score means the over won. It didn't matter which team did the scoring, just that the sum of the points was over the total set by sportsbooks. In this case, had the scores added up to exactly 55, both over and under bettors would have been refunded their bets.

Virginia Cavaliers Moneylines

A simpler bet one can make on the Cavs is a moneyline bet. With a moneyline bet, the Cavs (or their opponent) win the bet if they win the game, whether it’s a blowout or a nail-biter.

The odds can get slightly confusing, but if you think in terms of a $100 bet they make more sense. If the Cavaliers are +250 underdogs, a $100 bet profits $250. If they are -250 favorites, a $250 bet yields $100 in profit. Like with spread bets, underdogs get a plus sign and favorites get a minus sign.

Virginia Cavaliers Props

Betting on player props is a great way to get some additional action on the Cavaliers. Player props are over/unders bets on the stats of a certain player.

Virginia Cavaliers Futures

Futures bets are bets on the outcome of the entire season. You can bet on the Cavaliers to win the ACC (+10000), the Virginia win total (O/U 4.5), or the Heisman Trophy winner.
