Betting Highlights
Favorite Bet of All-Time
On the night of UMBC's historic upset of the No. 1-seed Virginia Cavaliers, about 10 of my friends and I gathered at my home to watch the NCAA tournament while playing craps in my living room. The room was electric, with every play of UMBC-Virginia interposed by the roll of dice. At some point during the evening, it was hard to tell whether our screams were directed at the television or a hot hand on the come-out roll. When the final buzzer sounded, we frenetically turned to each other like Jimmy V looking for someone to hug after NC State's 1983 national championship victory ... and then half of my friends jumped into the lake in my backyard because they didn't know what else to do. I finished the night up $23.
Most Heartbreaking Bet
In 2017, I was in Las Vegas for my best friend's bachelor party, we all opened up tickets on various college football games that Saturday afternoon, and against my better judgment, I dropped two units on my NC State Wolfpack against Wake Forest. I got the Pack at +3 and felt great about my position, because I made NC State the favorite, even though the game was on the road. Late in the game, State was down 6 points with the ball, driving deep into Wake territory, and QB Ryan Finley delivered a beautiful ball to WR Emeka Emezie, who subsequently drove towards the end zone ... but fumbled on the one-inch line. We lost by 6 points, and I was out more-than-chump-change. The rest of the night was a blur, but not for the usual (good) reasons.
