Please don’t ask me why but I feel good about this week. I smell a winner.
The John Deere Classic returns to TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, one of the PGA Tour's longest-running sponsorships (dating to 1971 as the Quad Cities Open) and a proven launching pad for future stars, having produced 25 first-time Tour winners.
The track is a par-71 layout stretching 7,327 yards, designed by D.A. Weibring on a former Arabian horse farm along the Rock River. It features Bentgrass fairways and greens complemented by thick Kentucky Bluegrass/Fescue rough of roughly four inches, which serves as the course's primary defense.
Wide fairways averaging more than 36 yards rewards accurate positioning over sheer power, and the generous, receptive layout has made it one of the lowest-scoring courses on Tour. Every winner over the last 16 years has finished 18-under par or better. The signature hole is the par-3 16th, perched on a cliff overlooking the Rock River.
Approach play is king at TPC Deere Run, with 42% of shots coming from inside 150 yards and missing the fairway roughly doubles proximity to the hole.
Putting matters immensely too, given the soft, true Bentgrass greens and a low 3-putt rate of 2.53%, with recent champions gaining roughly seven strokes putting for the week.
Off-the-tee accuracy outweighs raw distance, as greens in regulation drop from 80% out of the fairway to just 55% from the rough, and scrambling proves tougher than the course's easy scoring reputation suggests, with tightly mown collection areas and runoffs making around-the-green play more delicate than it appears.
The top predictive stats to watch are Birdie-or-Better %, SG: Approach, SG: Putting (Bent), and Proximity from 75–150 yards.
John Deere Classic Outright Winner Pick

John Deere Classic Pick: Aldrich Potgieter (+5600)
Potgieter is the pick this week, a boom-or-bust play with real upside.
He’s the longest hitter on Tour this season and sits fourth in SG: Off-the-Tee, so the raw talent and recent uptick in form are there: four straight cuts made with a pair of top-25s, plus a T35 while contending at the PGA Championship.
The catch is that TPC Deere Run has historically rewarded accuracy over power. Potgieter’s driving accuracy and approach play have lagged behind his distance numbers for most of the season.
If his ball-striking is on and he can find enough fairways to avoid the thick Bluegrass/Fescue rough, his length off the tee on the three reachable par-5s could be a real weapon this week.
