Going to an NBA game these days can cost a small fortune, but with grocery prices on the rise, watching at home isn’t exactly cheap either.

To get a sense of what fans are really spending on game-day snacks, we analyzed prices for bare-bones basket of items most people would grab for a watch party: a 6-pack of beer, potato chips, tortilla chips, and a jar of salsa. This isn’t a full catering spread, just the essentials for a casual game-day setup.

Using data from major retailers including Walmart, Target, Costco, Aldi, Kroger, H-E-B, Safeway, Publix, and Food Lion, we calculated the total basket price per city. Here’s what we found:

Key Findings

  • The cheapest city to host a basic NBA snack basket is Portland, OR ($26.69), driven by the lowest beer prices in the dataset ($10.70 per 6-pack).
  • Salt Lake City, UT ($26.97) ranks 2nd, followed by Memphis, TN ($27.85) in 3rd.
  • The most expensive city is New York, NY ($44.16).
  • Retailer choice significantly affects costs: ALDI offers the cheapest beer ($0.08/oz), Food Lion has the lowest per-ounce potato chips ($0.40/oz), H-E-B has the cheapest salsa ($0.14/oz), and Costco/ALDI offer the best value for tortilla chips ($0.35-$0.38/oz).
  • Switching stores can save shoppers up to $10-$15 per game, depending on retailer choice and item selection.
  • The national average for a bare-bones NBA snack basket is $33.45.

  • Beer Packs: ALDI is the cheapest at $0.08/oz. However, the most expensive per unit.
  • Chips: Food Lion offers the lowest per-ounce price.
  • Jar of Salsa: H-E-B dominates with just $0.14/oz.
  • Tortilla Chips: Costco and ALDI are the best options, around $0.35–0.38/oz.

The Bottom Line

On average, an extremely basic NBA snack basket costs about $33.45 nationwide, but the true cost of a watch party can vary a lot depending on your city. Some places make it surprisingly affordable, while others push the price well above $35 for the same simple spread. Even within a single city, choosing the right retailer can save, or cost, you up to $10-$15 per game.

Shopping tips for fans:

  • Local stores may have better deals: While our analysis focused on major national chains, neighborhood markets or regional grocers sometimes offer lower prices on specific items.
  • Simplify to save: You can reduce costs by skipping one of the four items or opting for smaller quantities. Every little bit helps if you’re on a budget.
  • Beware the bougie basket: Adding premium beers, artisanal chips, or gourmet salsa can quickly push your total far above the average, so plan accordingly.

Ultimately, your location, retailer choice, and shopping strategy all play a major role in your game-day budget. With a little planning, you can enjoy the game (and the snack) without breaking the bank.

Methodology

We wanted to find out what it really costs to host a simple game-day snack basket in every NBA city. Here’s how we did it:

We picked three ZIP codes near each team’s arena to capture real neighborhood pricing. We focused on major grocery stores (Walmart, Target, Costco, Aldi, Kroger, H-E-B, Safeway, Publix, and Food Lion) for broad coverage.

Since products come in different sizes, we calculated a price per ounce for each item, making it easy to compare a single bag of chips to a party-size bag, or a 6-pack of beer to a single bottle.

We looked at four core items: beer, potato chips, tortilla chips, and salsa. This is a basic, bare-bones snack spread intended to give a glimpse into costs and is not comprehensive of every shoppers’ game day decisions.

Finally, we averaged prices for each product at each store, then added them together to get a total basket price per city.

This lets us see which cities are cheapest or most expensive, and which retailers offer the best value. We also compared everything to a national average to highlight cities and stores that stand out.
