Spurs vs Grizzlies NBA Preview
Entering this season, the Grizzlies had won six of the last eight meetings against the Spurs. However, the Spurs have taken the first two matchups this season as they’ve ascended to the second seed in the Western Conference.
This time around, both teams are coming off losses, with San Antonio falling to the Trail Blazers on Saturday and Memphis dropping consecutive games to the Lakers in Los Angeles.
Tonight, the Spurs appear to be on the verge of getting All-Star Victor Wembanyama back after he missed the last two games with a knee injury.
It would be his first game against the Grizzlies this season, but Wembanyama has averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds and 5.4 blocks in seven career games versus Memphis. Prior to the injury, he scored 25 points in three straight games, though it’s reasonable to expect some form of minutes restriction tonight.
Ja Morant has never been shy about challenging Wembanyama at the rim with his ferocious dunk attempts. However, he may not get that opportunity tonight, as Morant is questionable with a calf injury.
Memphis could be extremely shorthanded, with Cedric Coward, Zach Edey and Brandon Clarke all ruled out. Vince Williams Jr. has missed the past three weeks, but he has a chance to return after being upgraded to questionable.
Still, don’t expect the Grizzlies to lay down because of injuries. Just last night, the Nuggets upset the 76ers without their entire starting lineup, a reminder that every night is a battle in the NBA.
If Memphis is indeed short-handed again, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Jaylen Wells may be tasked with pacing the offense.
Spurs vs Grizzlies Prediction, Betting Analysis
Like Wembanyama, Stephon Castle missed the first two games against the Grizzlies this season. However, he recorded seven assists in the final meeting last season and has seven assists in nine of his last 10 games overall.
Memphis presents a difficult matchup tonight, allowing the sixth-fewest assists to point guards. Even so, Castle has emerged as the primary facilitator for the league’s sixth-ranked offense. He’s averaging 7.3 assists and 12.3 potential assists per game.
The Spurs will be without Devin Vassell, but if Wembanyama plays, six teammates averaging double figures will be active, which should help Castle reach seven assists again.
A few of those assists could come via De’Aaron Fox, who can generate transition opportunities.
Fox has recorded a steal in 21 of 27 games this season, averaging 1.4 per game, and has at least one steal in all seven of his career games against Memphis.
Jaren Jackson Jr. is averaging 22.2 points over his last 10 games, clearing 20 in seven of them. He has also scored at least 18 points in seven of his last nine games against the Spurs.
Jaylen Wells is averaging 12.7 points across his last six games versus San Antonio, including a 20-point outing in the most recent meeting. He’s also scored at least 12 points in seven of his last 10 games, averaging 12.9 over that span.
Pick: Stephon Castle Over 6.5 Assists (-140)
