Alabama vs UNLV College Basketball Betting Preview

Alabama Basketball

Alabama has played the toughest schedule in the country so far this season. The Tide have two elite road wins, beating St. John’s and Illinois (neutral, but in Chicago), to go with two losses against top three teams in Purdue and Gonzaga.

This Bama squad is your typical Nate Oats team — sixth nationally in tempo and 26th in 3-point rate. The Tide have taken great care of the basketball thus far (25th in TO%), and their elite spacing leads to plenty of clean looks at the rim. They’re shooting 60.7% inside the arc, good for 31st-best in the country.

Defensively, Alabama sits at 51st on KenPom. It's definitely not the strength of the group, but to be fair, it's played an incredibly difficult schedule to start the season and it just got Keitenn Bristow back two games ago. Bristow has already proven himself as the Tide's best interior defender.

Labaron Philon Jr. is playing like a First Team All-American and is coming off of a career-high 29 points against Gonzaga.

Second-leading scorer Aden Holloway has been big time for the Tide so far this season, but he’s gone cold shooting the past couple of games, as he’s just four of his last 18 from distance.

UNLV Basketball

UNLV is off to quite the interesting start to year one under head coach Josh Pastner.

The Rebels lost to their two weakest opponents on their schedule, UT Martin and Montana, yet they beat three of their better opponents in Chattanooga, Saint Joseph’s and most prominently, Memphis, which came on the road in resounding fashion 92-78.

Pastner has the Rebels playing an up-and-down style, sitting at 12th nationally in tempo. The Rebs live at the free throw line — they’re fifth in the country in free-throw rate.

UNLV really makes its living in the lane, as it's 19th in 2-point percentage (62%) and 23rd in offensive rebounding. The Rebels do however struggle to shoot the ball from distance (28.3% clip so far this season).

High Point transfer Kimani Hamilton’s offensive rebounding has been strongly correlated with the Rebels' success. He pulled in five offensive rebounds in each of UNLV’s first three wins, and in the two losses, he only grabbed two apiece.

Freshman guard Issac Williamson, who missed the first two games of the year due to injury, has provided a huge spark since returning. He put up 25 points and hit six 3s to go along with five steals in the win over Memphis.

An interesting note for UNLV defensively is that 67% of opponent field goals are assisted, which is a top-10 highest rate allowed nationally.

Alabama vs. UNLV Betting Analysis

The Tide are big favorites here with a sky high total in this matchup between two of the fastest teams in the nation.

Alabama is due for some positive shooting regression, and I don’t expect this UNLV defense to offer much resistance on the ball to Philon and company.

Bama did struggle big time on the glass though against Gonzaga and Purdue, so UNLV could definitely pose some problems there.

It’s a big number, but I’m willing to lay it with the Tide. While I mentioned the rebounding advantage UNLV could have, Bama’s front line is well tested and will be ready to compete.

My Pick: Alabama -13.5 (Play to -14.5)
