Auburn vs Arkansas College Basketball Betting Preview
Auburn Basketball
The Tigers are coming off one of the best finishes in program history, having made the Final Four for the second time in the Bruce Pearl era. While both bids fell short of a national title, Auburn’s now-retired head coach Bruce Pearl surely has a lot to be proud of, calling it quits after 30 seasons coaching the sport.
Fortunately for the program, the Tigers were left in trustworthy hands, as Bruce gave the reins to his son Steven. Steven has led his Tigers to a 14-10 overall record thus far this season.
The departures of Johni Broome and Chad Baker-Mazara in the offseason brought some uncertainty, but the Tigers loaded up in the portal.
After playing just one season for three different programs, Keyshawn Hall seems to have finally found his proper home with the Tigers.
The former UCF star is averaging just shy of 21 points per contest, which ranks inside the top 25 nationally. He's also racking up seven rebounds and nearly three assists, further cementing himself as one of the best players in the SEC.
However, Hall is out for this game due to an undisclosed reason.
Pearl’s frontcourt also features Keshawn Murphy, who's scoring 11 points per game.
Fortunately, Auburn was able to retain its star point guard, Tahaad Pettiford. Pettiford is averaging over 14 points per game in his sophomore season at Auburn and remains the primary operator for a Tigers offense that ranks 13th in offensive efficiency by KenPom.
Pearl’s bunch hasn't been as reliable on the other end of the floor, just barely ranking inside the top 50 in the country in defensive efficiency.
As we enter mid-February, Auburn is a clear fringe tournament team that needs to improve substantially on defense.
Arkansas Basketball
Arkansas has an 18-6 overall record and a 8-3 mark in the SEC.
John Calipari's team is in scorching form with March right around the corner and surely have Final Four aspirations on their mind.
During an extremely accomplished 15-year tenure as head coach at Kentucky, Calipari earned a reputation as one of the best recruiters in the history of the sport.
The former Kentucky head coach receives praise not just for landing these top-tier recruits, but also for his knack for player development and preparation to play at the next level. That's really cemented his status as one of the best coaches in the history of the sport.
The list of NBA All-Stars who played collegiate ball under Coach Cal is astonishing.
Well, Calipari wasted no time landing two top-10 recruits for Arkansas, guards Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas. Both freshmen are projected to be lottery selections in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft.
Acuff has been nothing short of spectacular, posting upwards of 20 points and seven assists per game. The star has quickly established himself as one of the best scorers in the country, consistently posting 20 point-efforts while also converting on a staggering 50% of his field goal attempts.
Alongside Acuff in the backcourt, Thomas is also having quite the freshman campaign, scoring over 15 points per game.
The freshman duo leads an Arkansas offense that's scoring over 88 points per game this season and ranks seventh in the country in offensive efficiency, according to KenPom. The Razorbacks' backcourt is undoubtedly one of the best in the sport.
Trevon Brazile has also excelled offensively in his fourth season with the Razorbacks. While the 6-foot-10 forward has dealt with several injuries over the last couple of seasons, he's now fully healthy and posting 13-point, seven-rebound figures.
Brazile is considered by many to be one of the best two-way forwards in the country, and Nick Pringle is also thriving defensively for Arkansas. Both forwards add a ton of size to the Hogs' frontcourt and have been stellar rim protectors.
In spite of the tremendous defensive efforts made by Arkansas' bigs, the rest of the team hasn't quite followed suit. Calipari’s bunch is allowing over 75 points per game and ranks outside the top 60 in the country in defensive efficiency, according to KenPom.
In fact, Arkansas seems to have actually taken a step back defensively, allowing its opponents to score 86 points per game since late-January.
Auburn vs Arkansas Pick, Betting Analysis
While Arkansas looks to be in a far better position than Auburn in the long term, I'm worried about both teams on defense.
Since Auburn prevailed in a 22-point defeat over the Razorbacks in the teams’ first matchup in early January, I expect Calipari’s squad to be far more prepared for the second meeting, especially with the Tigers being without Hall.
So, I think this is a prime betting spot to back the well-coached Razorbacks at home with revenge on their mind. While handicapping the SEC can be difficult with a number of very athletic, evenly-matched teams on the schedule, this is a great spot to back the Hogs, who are red-hot.
I'll be buying into that revenge narrative.
Pick: Arkansas -8.5
