Bowling Green vs Miami (OH) College Basketball Betting Preview
Bowling Green Basketball
Bowling Green enters this contest with a 16-11 overall record, having won half of its first 14 conference matchups.
This will be the second meeting between these MAC foes, with Miami (OH) having already prevailed by double digits on the road just a few weeks ago.
In his third season at the helm, Bowling Green head coach Todd Simon has done a great job after concluding last season with a sub .500 record.
While Miami (OH) will likely be tournament-bound regardless of Friday night’s result, Simon’s bunch has a big opportunity to hand the RedHawks their first loss of the season and to build some momentum prior to the MAC Tournament.
Leading the charge for this Bowling Green offense is 6-foot-2 guard Javontae Campbell, who's having a phenomenal senior campaign. He's scoring nearly 19 points per game, along with five rebounds and five assists.
Campbell, who's also converting on over half of his field goal attempts, is the floor general for a Falcons bunch scoring over 89 points per contest this season. Alongside Campbell in Simon’s backcourt, 6-foot-4 sophomore guard Josiah Shackelford is having a stellar season of his own, posting over 11 points per contest.
6-foot-9 senior forward Sam Towns is also posting over 12 points per game, along with six rebounds. While the Falcons' frontcourt scores far less than its guards, Towns has been playing very well.
While Bowling Green’s offensive output thus far has been substantial, the Falcons rank outside the top 230 in the country in offensive efficiency, according to KenPom.
This lack of efficiency on the offensive end of the floor — while also maintaining their fast-tempo pace — can largely be attributed to the Falcons’ inability to protect the ball.
On the other end of the floor, Bowling Green has been far more efficient, allowing just 70 points per contest, which ranks second in the MAC. Simon’s Falcons defense ranks 68th nationally in defensive efficiency, per Haslamtrics.
If the Falcons are to go on the road and hand Miami (OH) its first loss of the season, it'll surely take a spectacular defensive effort.
Miami (OH) Basketball
Travis Steele is having a historic fourth season with the RedHawks, as they have their eyes on an undefeated season at 26-0.
The RedHawks’ vast success can be attributed to their well-rounded lineup and deep rotation. Peter Suder leads the team in scoring (15 PPG).
In addition to Suder, Miami (OH) has elite guard play all around, with both Eian Elmer and Luke Skaljac having superb seasons of their own.
The Redhawks' frontcourt also excels on the offensive end of the floor, with Brant Byers scoring nearly 15 points per game. Antwone Woolfolk has been a great two-way player, as well.
Miami (OH) has six players on its roster posting double-digit scoring efforts, making it very difficult for opposing defenses to game plan for the RedHawks.
Miami (OH) ranks seventh nationally in total offense, with the RedHawks posting just shy of 90 points per game.
Steele’s squad boasts a ton of experience and 3-point shooting prowess; two vital components that largely characterize teams set to thrive in March. The RedHawks rank 59th in the country in offensive efficiency, according to KenPom.
Miami (OH) hasn't been as efficient on the other end of the floor, allowing opponents to score over 75 points per contest.
While that number is quite normal for a team that likes to push the pace offensively, it could certainly be more of a problem than it appears on the surface, with the RedHawks ranking outside the top 100 in the country in defensive efficiency.
The lack of defensive prowess from Steele’s RedHawks isn't an immediate concern due to a weak schedule. From a long term perspective however, defensive efficiency could prove very problematic in the NCAA Tournament.
Bowling Green vs. Miami (OH) Betting Analysis
The last two teams to conclude its regular season undefeated were Kentucky back in 2015, and more recently Gonzaga in 2021. Like Gonzaga, the RedHawks are doing so without a very difficult conference schedule.
While the Zags prevailed in a number of challenging non-conference matchups prior in 2021, the same can't be said for Steele’s RedHawks.
It's very difficult to make a run in March without having been tested along the way, which raises many concerns about this bunch long term.
I think regression is definitely inevitable for the RedHawks, but after dismantling the Falcons on the road a month ago, it's tough for me to envision Miami (OH) having any difficulties on Friday.
It's really difficult to fade a team that continues to impress with each and every victory, so I think the RedHawks will come out of the gates hot in the first 20 minutes of the contest.
My Pick: Miami (OH) 1H ATS
