George Washington Basketball

George Washington is an enigma.

At times, you’ll see a high-flying offense put up some big scoring outings. In other games, it’ll lose as double-digit favorites to Davidson and Delaware, and make you think “huh?"

Chris Caputo is all about offense. The Revs rank No. 39 in KenPom's offensive efficiency, and their offense is tough to game plan against.

For one, the presence of stud center Rafael Castro opens up shooters. Castro leads George Washington with 16 points per game while adding eight rebounds a night. When he gets attention, it allows good looks for the shooters, and George Washington shoots 36% from deep.

If you think George Washington is a 3-point or bust team, I have bad news for you: Scoring inside is actually its strength, as it's shooting 62% on 2s, which ranks 12th nationally.

And on the missed 3s, Castro and big-man Luke Hunger led the offensive rebounding charge.

The guards will have to show up on the road. Tre Dinkins and Trey Autry both demand attention due to their shooting. Dinkins, in particular, can and will pull up from the logo, so he needs to be contained.

The one Achilles' heel for this offense is turnovers. If the Revs control the ball, they'll be in a good spot offensively to compete.

Where the issues arise is on the defensive end. George Washington's interior defense is a major problem, as it ranks 253rd in 2-point field goal defense. The ability to drive and kick to shooters stung the Revs against Davidson.

In all, the Revolutionaries are No. 173 in KenPom's defensive efficiency. There isn't much to like on that end, and it feels unlikely to turn around.

Don't look now, but Tony Skinn has George Mason well on its way to another 25+ win season. The Patriots are now 17-1, with their lone loss coming against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

Last season, the Patriots won using one of the nation's best defenses. In 2025-26, it's more of a balanced attack, which Skinn looked for in the portal.

Offensively, Kory Mincy leads the way with 17 points per game while shooting 42% from deep. The other four starters in the lineup average 10+ points a night, with big man Riley Allenspach producing 13.4.

Two things have led to George Mason's offensive resurgence. The main one is the Patriots' 14% turnover rate. When you play as slow as George Mason does, turnovers are a killer. The other thing is that George Mason is second in KenPom's FTA/FGA metric at 49.8.

I also wouldn't sleep on George Mason's defense. Just because it isn't a top-35 defense nationally, the Patriota still sit in the top 100 and also rank top-100 in 2-point and 3-point field goal defense.

Opponents tend to let it fly from deep, attempting 44% of their shots from downtown. It'll be interesting to see how the Patriots defend the Revs' shooters.

Skinn is terrific at adjusting game plans, so he could run the shooters off the line and force them to drive. That would serve the Patriots' defense well.

George Washington vs. George Mason Betting Analysis

I'm rolling with the Patriots at home. The line is just 2.5 points in George Mason's favor, and it hasn't lost a conference home game since March 2, 2024.

That isn't the only reason to back the Patriots, though.

I like their ability to slow things down. They play a very slow tempo, and George Washington wants to push it.

To me, it'll be easier to slow the tempo down since George Mason doesn't gamble for steals and wants to play tough one-on-one defense.

My Pick: George Mason -3.5
