Grand Canyon Basketball

Grand Canyon comes into this game wondering “what if” after recent performances against UNLV and New Mexico caused it to fall out of contention for a top seed in the Mountain West Tournament.

The Lopes have been up and down in league play, failing to consistently stack together impressive performances. This bunch is a dangerous in Mountain West play, but if Grand Canyon wants to be anything more than that this season, more consistency is needed.

The offense is headlined by Jaden Henley, who averages 17.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Makaih Williams averages 13.4 points per game and leads the Lopes with 39 made 3s. Four other players average at least eight points, and Grand Canyon has a variety of ways it can hurt opponents on the offensive end.

Defensively, Grand Canyon has been one of the best teams in the league. Three players have at least 21 blocked shots, and Efe Demirel and Nana Owusu-Anane are excellent in the painted area. Grand Canyon has done well to prevent good looks in the paint, and it defends the 3-point line very well.

San Diego State Basketball

San Diego State continues to build its NCAA Tournament resume by stacking together wins in Mountain West play. A convincing 14-point home win against Nevada over the weekend puts the Aztecs at 18-6 overall and 12-2 in league play with half-a-dozen games left on the regular-season schedule.

San Diego State is very tough at home and looks to continue piling up the wins in hopes of a top-two seed in the Mountain West Tournament.

The offense is led in scoring by Reese Dixon-Waters, who averages 12.7 points per game while providing a versatile skill-set that allows him to score in a variety of ways. Miles Byrd and BJ Davis each average 10 points per game, and the return of Magoon Gwath in the post is a huge lift for this offense.

Gwath is tremendous in the paint and does really well to fight for offensive rebounds while providing defensive support to Miles Heide on the block.

The defense is outstanding once again for San Diego State. The Aztecs' stop unit leads the conference in overall defensive efficiency, effective field goal percentage, blocked shots and turnovers forced. The pressure has suffocated the opposition and forces foes deep into the shot clock.

This often results in low-percentage 3-point shots that don’t go in. Grand Canyon doesn't want to shoot a lot of 3-point shots, and the Lopes are going to have to find ways to get effective paint touches or its offense is going to struggle.

Grand Canyon vs. San Diego State Betting Analysis

This line opened with San Diego State as a 7.5-point favorite and a total that was bet up from 136 to 138.5. I'm going to lay the number with the Aztecs.

San Diego State has such a dominant defense, and the advantage it has on that end of the floor is magnified at home. The Aztecs force so many contested and lower-percentage shots that I worry about how this is going to look for Grand Canyon's offense.

Grand Canyon is the worst 3-point shooting team in the Mountain West, and it may have to rely on outside shooting as the shot clock dwindles.

San Diego State did this well in the first meeting, even without Gwath. Post entries resulted in kick-outs and offensive resets. We saw Grand Canyon bury 10 3-point shots while shooting just 9-for-29 from 3-point range. I imagine Grand Canyon will have less success from beyond the arc.

The Aztecs' interior should be able to have its way with Grand Canyon on both ends, and the athleticism on the wings will create open looks. I think San Diego State feels as if one got away in its January road loss at Grand Canyon. I'm guessing the Aztecs are fully locked in and win this game by double digits at home.

My Pick: San Diego State -8.5
