Indiana vs USC College Basketball Betting Preview

Indiana Basketball

After a four-game skid at the beginning of their conference schedule, the Hoosiers have managed to right the ship convincingly. They come into this matchup having reeled off three straight wins against the likes of Rutgers, Purdue and UCLA.

Their turnaround has come from much improved play on the defensive end of the floor, more specifically, defending shots from inside the arc. This stout defense on the inside has been more of its norm, as Indiana ranks 34th in 2-point field goal percentage allowed.

Having this trend travel to Pasadena will be key, as the Trojans generate a large majority of their offense inside, ranking just 293rd in 3-point rate.

However, on the other end of the court, the 3-ball can create both positive and negative runs for the Hoosiers offensively. Indiana is eighth in 3-point rate and 78th in 3-point field goal percentage.

USC has been excellent at defending the 3, but it'll allow its opposition to take perimeter shots. While not many teams have had success from beyond the arc against the Trojans, they've yet to face a team that can take and make 3s like the Hoosiers.

While the Trojans are much improved in the second season of Eric Musselman's tenure, we have yet to see them play up to the level of their opposition. Their only win this season against a team ranked higher than them, according to Bart Torvik's rankings, came against Wisconsin on the road.

While picking up a win of that caliber is impressive, they didn't shoot well in that matchup, and they won't get away with a poor shooting night on Tuesday. Indiana is the far better offensive team, and we know the Hoosiers have the size to challenge Ezra Ausar in the paint and the length to contend with Chad Baker-Mazara in the mid-range.

Their real avenue for success offensively in this matchup is to get to the free-throw line, which they do at the second-highest rate in the country. Indiana is 246th in the free-throw rate allowed, so if fouls pile up, opportunities will open for the Trojans offensively. However, foul trouble isn't very predictive.

Indiana vs. USC Betting Analysis

This matchup is going to be tight, but home court advantage is a big factor in college hoops, and the 1.5-point spread is telling of just how good Indiana has been lately.

While we could see some variance in the Hoosiers' 3-point shooting, I'm expecting their defense to travel well and help grind out a road victory.

Take the Hoosiers to pull off the upset

My Pick: Indiana ML +105 (Play to -110)
