Kansas Jayhawks Preview: Need To Know

Kansas is coming off one of the crazier wins in college basketball so far this season, as it captured a 104-100 overtime victory against TCU.

Darryn Peterson should be good to go for the game as Kansas continues to try and find ways to keep him on the floor without aggravating his injuries. Peterson had clutch free throws at the end of regulation against TCU, but he didn't play in overtime due to cramps.

Kansas is 1-1 in Big 12 play and the main concern for me is its inability to defend. The Jayhawks have the 12th-best defense on KenPom, but they've given up a lot of easy buckets in their two conference games.

Another concern for me is not seeing Peterson and Melvin Council Jr. mesh together since Peterson has been back. Against UCF, Council picked up two quick fouls and sat the first half, while Peterson had 23 first-half points.

In the second half, Peterson only played five minutes due to cramps/tightness and Council had all 20 of his points while Peterson was on the bench. In overtime against TCU, Council had nine of his 18 points while Peterson sat out.

For Kansas to win at West Virginia, Peterson and Council will have to be able to be productive sharing the floor together.

West Virginia Mountaineers Preview: Need To Know

West Virginia is coming off a 62-60 win against Cincinnati. In that game, West Virginia shot almost 50% from the field while hitting 11 3s. However, it was careless with the basketball, something it has to avoid if it wants to upset Kansas at home.

Honor Huff is listed at 5-foot-10 (realistically 5-foot-8), 165 pounds, and normally a guy of his stature is known as a good facilitator at point guard. But that couldn't be further from the truth for Huff, and I love it.

Huff is essentially a tiny shooting guard who averages one assist a game. His sole reason for being on the floor is hitting 3s anywhere on the court.

Huff is averaging 17 points while shooting 41% from deep on 10 3-point attempts per game. 145 of his 173 field goal attempts are from deep, and he'll pull up if one person is on him or if the whole opposing team is guarding him.

Chance Moore is West Virginia's second-leading scorer at 13 points per game. He's only played nine games this season, but in eight of the nine, Moore has scored in double figures.

How To Make Kansas vs. West Virginia Picks

I expect this to be a fun game — 1 p.m. ET tip-off on FOX with excellent potential shot-making with Peterson/Council going up against Huff.

A player like Huff is made for a game like this — a home 'dog with a player that can get hot no matter what the defense throws at him.

With the way Kansas' defense has looked in Big 12 play, I don't have faith in the Jayhawks to eliminate Huff's ability to get shots off.

Give me West Virginia at home.

My Pick: West Virginia +3.5
