Michigan State Spartans Betting Preview

Michigan State sits at 16-2 overall and 6-1 in Big Ten play after winning four in a row.

One thing is for certain: this team loves to guard. Michigan State is the best defense in the country. In conference play, the Spartans rank first in defensive effective field goal percentage (45.4%), allow the fewest offensive rebounds (19.3%) and boast the top 3-point defense (27.5%).

Offensively, they’ve been more middle of the pack in league play. Michigan State owns the best offensive rebounding percentage at 38.5%, but it also carries the worst turnover rate at 21.4%.

Jaxon Kohler has been Mr. Consistent all season for the Spartans, leading the team in both points (13.3) and rebounds (9.9). Last game marked the first time all season he failed to reach double figures in scoring, so expect him to be eager to bounce back on the road at Oregon.

Jeremy Fears Jr. has also been a reliable scoring option of late, averaging 17.8 points over Michigan State’s last six games. Fears has done a strong job attacking the paint, either finishing at the rim or drawing fouls and getting his points at the free-throw line.

Oregon owns a defensive free-throw rate of 39.6% in conference play, which ranks 15th. I expect Fears to continue getting to the line against an Oregon team that’s prone to fouling.

Oregon Ducks Betting Preview

Oregon comes into this game at 8-10 overall and 1-6 in Big Ten play, having dropped four straight. The Ducks will be without their leading scorer — Nate Bittle — and possibly their second-leading scorer, Jackson Shelstad.

Sean Stewart stepped up in Bittle’s absence against Michigan, scoring 22 points, grabbing eight rebounds and adding two blocks. Stewart has always had elite athleticism, dating back to his days at Duke. His issue throughout his career — much like Oregon’s as a team this season — has been fouling.

As mentioned above, Oregon ranks 15th in defensive free-throw rate in Big Ten play.

The Ducks also rank 17th out of 18 teams in the Big Ten in offensive rebounds allowed, and 15th out of 18 in 3-point defense.

For Oregon to pull off a home upset, Kwame Evans Jr. and Stewart will need to keep the rebounding battle close against Michigan State, and Takai Simpkins must break out of his shooting slump (2-for-20 over his last five games), which is a tall task against the best 3-point defense in the conference.

How To Make Michigan State vs. Oregon Picks & Predictions

Oregon showed fight against Michigan despite being down its two leading scorers. But now the best defense in the country comes to town, and the Ducks will need another big-time performance from their role players, similar to what Stewart delivered against Michigan.

Unfortunately for Oregon, Kohler is coming off his lowest scoring outing of the season and should be looking to assert himself against a shorthanded frontcourt that’s prone to foul trouble.

Fears will control the game as Michigan State smothers Oregon, and Coen Carr will put an exclamation point on it with a transition dunk that brings the house down.

My Pick: Michigan State -10.5
