Oakland Basketball

Oakland is coming off a 16-18 season in which its shooting woes never evened out. The Golden Grizzlies shot just 31% from deep last year and had just one player — Nassim Mashhour — who hit over 34% from deep.

Mashhour is one of the more important returning Oakland players. But none are more critical than stud big man, Tuburu Naivalurua. The 6-foot-8, 245-pound big is the name to watch in this game. He didn't look overwhelmed by power-conference foes last season, posting big performances against Kansas and Arkansas.

This test could be a bit tougher, though, especially with all of the Wolverines' length.

Greg Kampe made some portal moves that can really pay off. Adding Brody Robinson brings shooting to the lead guard spot. He shot 40% from deep last season with UT Arlington, while averaging 4.4 assists.

Robinson isn't much of a scorer anywhere else, which is where JUCO transfer Khoi Thurmon and Lenoir-Rhyne transfer Ziare Wells can help.

Adding players such as Robinson, Wells and Brett White II should help in the shooting department. Each of them shot at least 39% from deep last year, albeit, going from their previous locations to playing in Ann Arbor is a big jump.

The slow pace the Golden Grizzles play at should help in this affair. Kampe is known to change his pace philosophy based on his roster, but playing slower should suit this team well.

Maybe the Golden Grizzlies jump from their 334rd-ranked pace last year, but slowing it down to set their defense and limit Michigan in transition would be smart.

Although Oakland has less size than Michigan, it's not like the Golden Grizzlies are one of the tiny mid-major squads. It starts with Naivalurua, but Michael Houge, who averaged 8.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last season at Jacksonville State, is 6-foot-7, 229 pounds.

Nate Deer and Isaac Garrett also will be rotation members with size.

The first year of Dusty May's tenure in Ann Arbor was picture-perfect. He led the Wolverines to the Sweet 16, and point forward Danny Wolf was excellent.

Surely, May didn't go out and find another point forward … right? Wrong. UAB transfer Yaxel Lendeborg isn't just the best player on Michigan — he's also one of the top players in America. The uber-versatile big man averaged 17.7 points, 11.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game at UAB last year.

Lendeborg can play three positions, which brings up some interesting options for Michigan. If Coach May wants a bigger lineup, he can play Lendeborg at the three with Morez Johnson Jr. at the four and 7-foot-3 center Aday Mara at the five.

The only issue with that lineup is shooting. Johnson and Mara don't stretch the floor, and point guard Elliot Cadeau is a below-average shooter.

However, in certain moments, that lineup could work, and I feel like this matchup is one.

Michigan will face Oakland's zone defense, which will open up plenty of shooting chances.

That could be an issue for Michigan, though. Returning wing Roddy Gayle Jr. shot 23% from deep last season and Cadeau is a non-shooter. Nimari Burnett is the only trustworthy spot-up shooter. Lendeborg can shoot it, but that's not where his game thrives.

Oakland vs. Michigan Betting Analysis

With the slow pace Oakland plays at and its funky defense, I expect a closer game than people think.

Michigan still needs to figure out its best lineup. That's the case for most teams, but very few teams have the big-man options that Michigan does.

It'll take time to see how well the jumbo lineup works in-game.

Just look back at last year: Oakland covered the spread versus Illinois, Kansas and Michigan State, while Arkansas beat the breaks off of it.

With the spread as high as it is, Oakland can cover it to start 2025-26.

My Pick: Oakland +24.5
