Pitt Basketball

The ACC tourney tips off on Tuesday as the 15th-seeded Pitt Panthers are set to square off with Stanford for a chance to play NC State in the second round at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.

Pitt enters this ACC contest with an 11-19 overall record.

It's been a very up-and-down season for head coach Jeff Capel, who's in his eighth season at the helm. Capel has led Pittsburgh to just one NCAA Tournament appearance in his tenure, having last made the Big Dance in 2023.

After a horrific 1-8 stretch during February, Capel’s bunch has won three of its last five contests, heading into the first round of this tourney with some slight momentum.

Leading the charge for this Panthers’ offense is Cameron Corhen. In his second season with the team, Corhen is posting over 13 points per contest, along with nearly seven rebounds on average.

He's been a bright light in an otherwise dark campaign for the Panthers, as Corhen thrives on both ends of the floor and has been an exceptional presence for Capel’s defensive frontcourt.

Barry Dunning Jr. is having himself quite the season as well, averaging over 12 points per game. The senior has an elite frame at the guard position, boasting tremendous length and athleticism.

Alongside Cohren, freshman forward Roman Siulepa has been impressive for the Panthers, posting double-figure scoring efforts.

While Capel’s bunch ranks last in the ACC, the Panthers' frontcourt features a ton of versatility and leads a Pitt offense that's scoring 71 points per game. The Panthers rank outside the top 100 in offensive efficiency rating, per KenPom.

On the other end of the floor, from a scoring margin perspective, Capel’s defensive unit has been right on par with Pittsburgh’s offense, also allowing its opponents to score 71 points of offense while maintaining a margin hovering around zero.

Capel’s bunch has been far more efficient on the defensive end of the floor, though, ranking 95th per KenPom.

Stanford Basketball

Stanford enters the first round of the ACC Tournament as the 10th seed and posted a 20-11 overall record this season.

Per ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi, Stanford is projected on the bubble, adding sizable significance to the Cardinal’s performance in the conference tournament.

Leading the charge for this Stanford offense is its freshman guard, Ebuka Okorie. He's proved to be one of the best scorers in college basketball, posting nearly 23 points per contest.

The New Hampshire native boasts impressive versatility, averaging nearly four rebounds and four assists per game. If Stanford is to build upon its current momentum and make a deep run into the ACC Tournament, it'll most definitely be on the back of its freshman phenom.

Benny Gealer adds some experience to Smith’s Cardinal backcourt. Gealer has made a big impact as a senior, posting double-figure scoring after failing to do so in his first three seasons.

Chisom Okpara is undoubtedly the second-best player on Smith’s roster behind Okorie, with the Cardinal senior posting 14 points per contest.

Opkara has also been a vital presence in Stanford’s defensive frontcourt, making it difficult for opposing forwards to find open looks in the lane.

Stanford’s offense is scoring over 76 points and ranks inside the top 60 nationally in offensive efficiency rating, per KenPom. The Cardinal are posting a +3 scoring margin this season, as their defense is allowing their opponents to score 73 points of offense per contest.

Stanford is less efficient on the defensive end of the floor, ranking outside the top 75 in the country in defensive efficiency rating, which will surely need to improve in a tournament that features several teams with tremendous offensive firepower.

Pitt vs. Stanford Betting Analysis

While Stanford was given the 10-seed in the ACC Tournament — requiring it to play in the first round — this Cardinal bunch is one of the hottest teams in the conference.

Stanford has won four consecutive games, having just defeated Pittsburgh (its first-round opponent) and its potential second-round opponent, NC State.

I'm inclined to back Stanford in this spot as it comes into the event in far better form than Pittsburgh.

Arguably more significant, the Cardinal not only have one of the best players in the ACC, but also in the entire country in Okorie. The offensive impact of an elite superstar can do wonders in the month of March.

I think Tuesday’s ACC showdown has the potential to be very closely-contested on a neutral floor, so I'll be looking to back the Cardinal on the moneyline.

I'll also be taking a shot on Cardinal “diaper dandy” Okorie to shred a weak Panthers perimeter defense and soar over his 3-point total.

My Pick: Stanford ML -200 | Ebuka Okorie Over Points Prop
