Providence vs Virginia Tech College Basketball Betting Preview

The Hokies and Friars make for a fascinating early-season matchup. Both are expected to jostle in the middle of the pack of their respective power conference, with computer metrics separating them by just a few slots currently.

Both coaches are in dire need of a bounce-back season after dismal runs in 2024-25 and can see the faint glint of an at-large bid on the horizon if this season goes according to plan.

Each tipped off the season with a win over a lesser opponent this week, with some surprises popping off the box score that should give hints about what to expect in this game.

Kim English's second year at Providence was a major disappointment. After 20 wins in his debut campaign, English and the Friars managed just 12 last season and lost 10 of their final 11 outings.

A lot of that disappointment was due to an injury to all-conference leading scorer Bryce Hopkins. He was supposed to be the focal point for the Friars, but played in just three games. Now healthy, he spurned Providence and headed down the I-95 corridor to join Big East rival St. John's.

Another potential star, Jayden Pierre, left for TCU, and English had work to do in the offseason. Returning guard Corey Floyd should fill some of the void, yet he would need to elevate his game to make a major impact.

He's joined by Vanderbilt transfer Jason Edwards and UCF transfer Jaylin Sellers, both of whom have scored 15-plus points per game for a power conference program in the past.

In the opener against Holy Cross, the Friars' freshman popped a bit, showcasing a few potential X-factors. Jamier Jones was a perfect seven for seven from the field en route to 16 points off the bench. Estonian forward Stefan Vaaks scored 19 points in 20 minutes of play, a fantastic collegiate debut.

It may take time for English to sort out his lineups and have his team ready for a grueling Big East, yet he has the talent to be competitive.

Mike Young led the Hokies to a losing record last season, his first in six years in Blacksburg. Tech plummeted to 164th in KenPom, never beating a team ranked 75th or better. That effort will make his seat a tad bit warm as this season begins, though he has also built a roster capable of making waves.

Young retained Toibu Lawal, who posted six double-doubles for the Hokies last year and started this season with 20 points and 12 rebounds in a blowout win over Charleston Southern. To complement Lawal, Young found Amani Hansberry in the transfer portal.

Hansberry was a top 100 recruit once upon a time, now playing for his third program in a third power conference in three years. The 6-foot-8 forward added 19 points and 13 rebounds of his own in the opener, as the Hokie frontcourt bullied Charleston Southern inside.

The real game-changer in the starting lineup is Greek freshman Neoklis Avdalas. He had a tough shooting night in his debut, but added nine assists and two blocks, with just one turnover, as a 6-foot-9 creator. If he's a real playmaker, capable of producing that way against ACC opponents, suddenly these Hokies look sneaky dangerous in a balanced ACC.

Duke and Louisville won't be shaking in their boots, but Young is an established, sharp coach with the ability to make the sum greater than the parts at his disposal. That could start as early as Saturday against the Friars.

Providence vs. Virginia Tech Betting Analysis

Early in the season, with both teams looking to find their groove, I'm far more trusting of Young than English. Lawal also makes for a steady presence to bet on, and I'm very intrigued by what Avdalas has to offer this season.

This game is being played at the Mohegan Sun, in Providence's neck of the woods, but let's not worry as if this is a true road game. I'm comfortable taking the Hokies to steal a win that should bolster their resume this March.

My Pick: Virginia Tech ML -126
