Rutgers Basketball

The Steve Pikiell era at Rutgers has hit the skids. After taking over a program in the desert, Pikiell led the Scarlet Knights to two NCAA Tournament berths, with a third lost to the pandemic season.

This campaign will mark a fourth straight without reaching the Big Dance, though Pikiell is unlikely to leave Rutgers this offseason. Recent reporting (including CBS Sports' Matt Norlander) identified that Pikiell's contract is completely prohibitive for Rutgers to terminate.

That leaves this Scarlet Knights team aimlessly finishing the rest of this season. Rutgers is just 5-13 in Big Ten play, with all five wins coming against the other teams amid the bottom five of the Big Ten standings.

Rutgers' best chance at an upset win came against the Michigan State team it'll visit Thursday night. Back in January, Rutgers led Sparty by 12 points in the game's final quarter before slowly losing the lead and eventually losing in overtime by nine points.

That's tended to happen to Rutgers when facing top teams. Rutgers' offense shoots the sixth-longest average 2-point shots, per KenPom, indicative of how often the Knights settle in the mid-range versus attacking the rim.

That's led to the worst 2-point shooting percentage in the Big Ten and a tendency to go ice cold. Rutgers ranks in the bottom three in the conference in both creating kill shots (EvanMiya's metric measuring 10-0 runs in a game) and allowing kill shots.

Even when things start to go right for Rutgers for a bit, the opposing team is always on the precipice of a big run, thanks to the inefficient and clunky Rutgers offense.

This Rutgers game might look like a minor bump in the road for Sparty, but it does have massive implications. Michigan State finds itself in a dogfight near the top of the Big Ten standings.

Rival Michigan has clinched the conference crown and top seed at the conference tournament, yet there's a battle for the remaining double-byes at the league tourney. Three more teams will join Michigan, with five teams jockeying to do so.

In recent weeks, it's felt like everyone but Michigan State has stumbled. Nebraska lost to UCLA, Wisconsin lost at Oregon, Illinois lost two straight and Purdue has lost three of four, including a massive game against the Spartans.

This has left Sparty with half a leg up, but Michigan State needs to either win one of its final two games or continue to get some help from its competition.

Taking care of business at home against Rutgers is certainly easier than putting the pressure on the season finale at Michigan, or expecting someone else to do the work.

Michigan State has played like the second-best team in the conference for most of this season. Sparty might be the best rebounding team in the country, joining Florida as the only two squads that rank in the top 15 in rebounding rate on both ends of the floor.

When the Spartans clean the defensive glass, point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. leads a patient but potent attack heading the other direction. He leads the nation in assist rate, shouldering a huge load in terms of offensive playmaking.

Offensive rebounds for Michigan State lead to easy putbacks or kickout 3s from a group of willing shooters.

Extra possessions courtesy of rebounding dominance never go underutilized for Tom Izzo's club.

Rutgers vs. Michigan State Betting Analysis

While I fully expect Sparty to take care of business, there's an odd chance for this to be a letdown game. Rutgers played Michigan State close six weeks ago and now catches the Spartans between a sweep of Purdue and Indiana on the road and a hugely hyped trip down the road to Ann Arbor.

A trap game on Senior Night, while spotting nearly 20 points to the spread, is a shaky proposition for me.

Betting the total here should be far less shaky. At home this season, Sparty has been happy to play slow-paced games with low total scores.

The under is 10-5 in Michigan State home games this season, including 6-3 in Big Ten play. It's made for a reliable bet all season long.

Also, our Action PRO projections have this total almost at 138 points compared to the current line (1412.5) as of writing. That gives us a solid edge and a grade of a B on this pick.

Michigan State should smother Rutgers and keep this game below the total.

My Pick: Under 142.5 (Play to 141)
