Seton Hall Basketball

Compared to the recent seasons of the resurgent, post-realignment Big East, this is a down year for one of basketball's most fun-filled conferences. It's become quite clear that only three Big East teams will see the NCAA Tournament, barring a miracle.

Bracket Matrix no longer even has a Big East team on the wrong side of the bubble looking in, while T-Rank has Seton Hall as the seventh team outside the cut line.

That's a stark change from earlier in the season. Seton Hall was 14-2, staring at a postseason fate. Since then, the Pirates are just 5-7, playing in a Big East that lacks bite. With only three teams tourney-bound, Seton Hall essentially had six tries at a big win.

The Pirates were swept by Villanova and lost their games against UConn and St. John's, with rematches against those top teams still to come down the stretch.

To make matters worse, Seton Hall has taken some bad losses and shown some real clunker performances. Seton Hall lost to Butler, DePaul, Creighton, and DePaul again. No team swept by DePaul has a chance to make noise in March.

All of the Pirates' issues come on the offensive end of the floor. In Big East play, Seton Hall leads the conference in defensive efficiency, but is last on the offensive side. Seton Hall shoots under 50% inside the arc and dismally under 28% from deep in Big East play.

Seton Hall's sluggish and ugly offense will doom the Pirates to a meaningless March.

UConn Basketball

After a February 18 loss to Creighton at home, which dropped UConn from the top of the Big East standings, the Huskies got their chance to reclaim that spot with a home date with St. John's. The Red Storm entered on a 13-game winning streak, including the critical first matchup between the Big East's contenders back on February 6.

Not only did UConn win that game, but the Huskies also pummeled the Johnnies. The Red Storm's only lead was 2-0, after which UConn blew the doors off St. John's.

Rick Pitino's club managed only 40 points, including just 14 after halftime. The Johnnies shot 25% from 3-point range, which is not good but miles better than the 17% they shot inside the arc. St. John's missed its last 24 shots from the field!

In a season that includes a win at Allen Fieldhouse and wins over Florida and Illinois, this was UConn's best performance of the year, putting the Huskies on track for the final top seed in the NCAA Tournament.

That's a scary proposition for the rest of college basketball. Two-time champion Danny Hurley clearly has a method that helps his teams peak when they need to, in the pressure moments of March and April.

One of the key reasons this UConn team is hitting its stride comes in the middle, where Tarris Reed is evolving from a reliable big man to a game-changer. He has three double-doubles in his last five games and is averaging 2.7 blocks per game in the month of February. On both ends of the court, he's elevated his game and taken the Huskies to another level.

Seton Hall vs. UConn Betting Analysis

If you're a believer in shooting regression, the signs in this game are flashing in your face. Yes, UConn's defense punished St. John's and led to those 24 straight missed shots, yet there's absolutely some luck baked into that anomaly.

Seton Hall brings some signs of regression into Saturday's game as well. The Pirates were able to win a disgusting 51-47 game against Georgetown last weekend. In that game, the Pirates took 18 3-point attempts and did not make one. Go back to their prior game against DePaul, and the Pirates missed their last four 3s in that game as well. It's been 22 attempts and 10 days since Seton Hall made a 3-pointer in a game.

Now, I'm not willing to go crazy and suggest Seton Hall shoots the lights out on the road and wins this game. This is, after all, a team that shoots the 3 infrequently and poorly already, but I certainly expect the Pirates to make something.

UConn could catch a wave of regression as well, since Seton Hall's last three opponents have combined to shoot 33% from the field and 23% from deep.

A few shots should drop, and this game should hit its very low total.

My Pick: Over 130 or better
