UConn vs Butler College Basketball Betting Preview
UConn Basketball
In the wake of UConn having won two of the last three national titles, head coach Dan Hurley has already cemented a legacy that will live on forever.
The Huskies are back in the spotlight again after somewhat of a down season (by their standards) in 2024-25.
UConn suffered a close defeat to St. John's at Madison Square Garden this past Friday, but it heads into Wednesday night’s game with a 22-2 overall record.
The Huskies' second loss came after an impressive 18-game winning streak, with their only other defeat coming against Arizona.
The Huskies returned a number of key players from last season’s team, including Tarris Reed Jr., Alex Karaban and Solo Ball.
Ball leads an experienced UConn offense, as he's posting 14 points per game. Alongside Ball, Silas Demary Jr. is also averaging double figures in scoring.
In Hurley’s frontcourt, Reed has been phenomenal on both ends of the floor, as he's posting 14 points per game, along with grabbing nearly eight rebounds. The senior is converting on an incredible 64% of his field goal attempts, which ranks 13th nationally.
Surprisingly, this UConn offense has actually been slightly less efficient this season than in year’s past, just barely ranking inside the top 30 in offensive efficiency, according to KenPom.
Per usual, Hurley’s bunch remains one of the best defensive teams in the country, with Reed serving as a dominant rim protector who makes it very difficult for opponents to find open looks inside the lane. UConn has the fifth-ranked defense in the country, according to Haslametrics, with its opponents scoring just 63 points per contest.
Hurley has successfully implemented a defensive philosophy built on relentless pressure, elite conditioning and teamwork above all else — often referred to as a “pack mentality” by the Huskies head coach.
It's this sense of relentless competitive effort, mindful communication and overall team values that have enabled the UConn head coach to build a dynasty in Storrs over the last five-plus years.
Butler Basketball
Butler enters Wednesday’s matchup with a 13-11 overall record, having dropped four consecutive contests.
Head coach Thad Matta is his second stint with the Bulldogs, having previously served as head coach for Butler for just one season in 2001, prior to Brad Stevens’ reign of excellence.
In the fourth season of his latest tenure, Matta’s bunch is skidding big time after a relatively promising first couple months. The Butler head coach failed to make the NCAA Tournament in each of his first three seasons in Indianapolis.
Leading the charge for the Butler offense is 6-foot-4 junior guard Finley Bizjack, who's averaging over 17 points per game. Bizjack has been a pleasant surprise for Butler’s backcourt, leading an offense that's scoring over 82 points per game.
Matta had a pretty successful offseason for the Bulldogs, most notably landing a very athletic two-way player in the transfer portal in former Gonzaga forward Michael Ajayi.
Ajayi has been nothing short of spectacular in his first season in Indy, with the Butler forward averaging over 16 points per game, along with 11 rebounds.
While the Bulldogs' offense is scoring a good amount of points, a deeper look reveals that it's been rather inefficient on that end of the floor, largely due to a sizable turnover problem. Butler ranks outside the top 70 in the country in offensive efficiency this season, according to KenPom.
The Bulldogs have been even worse defensively, allowing over 78 points per game to its opponents over the first 24 games of the season.
UConn vs. Butler Betting Analysis
For a Butler team in worse form than any other team in the Big East, it's a really bad time to be matched up with an extremely motivated UConn squad committed to righting the wrong of its second loss of the season.
After the Huskies beat the Bulldogs by 20 in their first meeting of the season, it's tough to envision Thad Matta’s Bulldogs being able to keep this game competitive, even on its home floor.
I expect the Huskies to come out of the gates scorching over the first 20 minutes of the game, with Butler slowly creeping back in the second half to make the matchup slightly more competitive.
I'm buying into the UConn motivation angle, as there's not a single coach in college basketball I would rather back coming off a loss than Hurley.
I'll be backing UConn to cover the first-half spread.
My Pick: UConn 1H -6.5
