How Appalachian State Reached the Boca Raton Bowl

Louisiana proved to be the thorn in Appalachian State’s side the season.

The Mountaineers posted another stellar campaign, evidenced by their 10-3 overall record, but two losses to the Ragin’ Cajuns, including in the Sun Belt Championship Game, prevented App State from yet another conference title.

Still, Appalachian State was very generous to college football bettors this year, posting an 8-4 against-the-spread (ATS) record for a very profitable 66.7% win rate.

Interestingly, two of those ATS losses came in the team’s final two games as Appalachian State failed to cover against Georgia Southern in its regular-season finale before also losing straight-up to Louisiana in the aforementioned Sun Belt title game.

How Western Kentucky Reached the Boca Raton Bowl

What’s better than a team that scores a bunch of points and wins you a lot of money along the way?

Meet Western Kentucky.

The Hilltoppers were the third-most profitable team in the country against the spread (9-3, 75%) during the regular season, thanks to an offense that ranked fourth in scoring (41.8 PPG).

Houston Baptist transfer and starting quarterback Bailey Zappe was superb for an offense that threw the ball at the second-highest rate in the entire nation.

He ought to pen the Heisman voters after leading the country in both passing yards and touchdowns.

Western Kentucky’s skill corps is headlined by Jerreth Sterns and Mitchell Tinsley, who both have more than 1,000 yards and double-digit touchdowns.
