Baylor head coach Dave Aranda had no answers for his Bears defense in a 38-24 loss to Auburn to open the 2025 season.

The Tigers executed on 51 rushing attempts for a 72% Success Rate, as the bulk of the damage came from quarterback Jackson Arnold. Auburn consistently attacked between the tackles, with Arnold and running back Damari Alston running for 221 yards and three touchdowns.

Baylor currently sits bottom-10 nationally in run defense and tackling, per PFF.

Enter SMU, straight off a blitz of East Texas A&M, where the Mustangs offense moved at a lightning pace. After averaging 24.5 seconds per play in 2024, head coach Rhett Lashlee dialed up a rate of 20 seconds per play in Week 1.

Quarterback Kevin Jennings didn't need to rush in the opening win but did go for 261 designed yards for SMU last year.

Three different running backs forced at least three missed tackles against East Texas A&M, a potential issue for a Baylor defense that missed 23 tackles against Auburn.

Baylor should contribute to the points party as well. Quarterback Sawyer Robertson connected on three touchdowns in Week 1. Slot receivers Michael Trigg and Kole Wilson dominated the Auburn defense with 233 receiving yards.

Offensive coordinator Jake Spavital also amped up the tempo, as Baylor finished at 22.1 seconds per play in Week 1 compared to 24.1 seconds in 2024.

Pick: Over 65 or Better
