Miami Hurricanes Betting Preview: Getting Past Beck's Blunders

A lot of frustration is mounting in the 305 after the recent College Football Playoff projections were released, and I get it.

Notre Dame ranked higher than Miami? Even after Miami beat the Irish?

OK.

I’m not saying Miami is perfect. Carson Beck has proven to be a bit of a dud under brighter lights. His ACC-leading 73.1% completion rate looks fantastic, but he’s a turnover machine when the 'Canes lose.

Four interceptions against Louisville. Two against SMU.

But the advantages that Miami holds over its opponents are crystal clear.

Offensively, the Hurricanes rank ninth nationally in Success Rate, while Virginia Tech’s defense ranks 123rd in Success Rate allowed.

Tech has also proven not to cause much havoc on the defensive side of the ball, so even with Beck’s mental blunders, I don’t think he will have much of an issue.

Especially with Malachi Toney, who is college football’s most electric freshman right now.

Defensively, there’s a lot to like with the 'Canes, but the loss of defensive back Keionte Scott for the rest of the season is a huge blow to Miami’s secondary.

Who steps in for Scott? It’s hard to say. Though Mario Cristobal seems to be impressed with freshman safety Bryce Fitzgerald, who played 36 snaps last week against NC State.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview: New Coach, Same Face on the Sidelines

Virginia Tech was in the news after learning that it had brought in former Penn State coach James Franklin.

Franklin won’t be on the sidelines for this game, and it’ll still be interim coach Philip Montgomery’s squad for at least this week.

There isn’t a whole lot to like about the Hokies this season, and you can probably toss the 2025 season in the trash when it’s over with.

Quarterback Kyron Drones has been brutal so far, completing 58% of his passes, with four sub-55% games in his past five games.

He does do a decent amount of damage on the ground, as he has run for well over 500 yards and nine rushing touchdowns.

Still, the work of Marcellous Hawkins and Terion Stewart has drastically boosted the Hokies’ rushing attack. The Hokies rank 35th nationally in Rush Success Rate, but that might not mean much, as Miami ranks 18th in Rush Success Rate allowed.

On the defensive side of the ball, Tech has some excellent options like Kemari Copeland, Kaleb Spencer, and Thomas Williams. Still, it’s hard to truly trust a unit that lets up 32 points per game.

Miami vs Virginia Tech Pick, Betting Analysis

Prior to the new coaching hire, you could’ve argued that the vibes in Blacksburg were at an all-time low.

Still, I don't think the spread should be over 17.

Our Action Network projections make this line Miami -9.4, which makes more sense.

In the 10 games played this season, Miami has only gone on the road twice. And in those games, the Hurricanes won a close game against Florida State in Tallahassee (28-22) and then lost in overtime against SMU in Dallas (26-20).

So while Miami is clearly the better program here, going on the road has never been its strong suit. And with the vibes now at an all-time high under a new coach in Blacksburg, it has the makings of a hectic environment.

Pick: Virginia Tech +17.5 (-110, bet365)
