How North Carolina Reached the Duke's Mayo Bowl

Mack Brown’s North Carolina squad was the epitome of volatile, and it was clear that would be the case from the get-go.

The Tar Heels, widely considered a formidable threat in the ACC, suffered a season-opening loss to Virginia Tech as a touchdown-sized favorite.

And that wasn’t even the most embarrassing loss of the year.

UNC dropped a neutral-site clash to Georgia Tech as a 14-point favorite, then got raked by double-digits to Florida State as 18-point chalk two weeks later.

Quarterback Sam Howell was a potential No. 1 overall draft pick entering the season. The dual threat recorded 23 scores through the air and another 11 on the ground, with nine interceptions. He, too, saw some peaks and valleys but was far from the Tar Heels’ biggest problem.

The defense was awful, coughing up north of 400 total yards and 31 points per contest.

How South Carolina Reached the Duke's Mayo Bowl

What an interesting year for South Carolina.

After starting the season with two wins, followed by two straight losses, the Gamecocks alternated wins and losses the rest of the way en route to a 6-6 campaign.

And while not perfect, against-the-spread (ATS) records can also provide insight into a team’s performance compared to expectations.

For example, a team favored by 30 points should have no trouble winning a game straight up, but failing to cover that number shows a bit of underperformance.

In 2021 the Gamecocks were just off betting market expectations, finishing with a 5-6 ATS record.

But again, the numbers are very close as South Carolina’s average cover margin was -0.55 points.
