Oklahoma vs. Michigan Picks, Predictions
By Pete Ruden
The Oklahoma Sooners take on the Michigan Wolverines in an SEC/Big Ten battle between two blue bloods that had disappointing seasons in 2024.
Oklahoma had high hopes for its season with 5-star quarterback prospect Jackson Arnold taking the reins under center. However, injuries and a dysfunctional offensive line led to a 6-7 season that ended with a 21-20 loss to Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl.
Michigan, meanwhile, won the College Football Playoff National Championship in 2023-24 but struggled through its first season with Sherrone Moore at the helm in place of Jim Harbaugh. The Wolverines had no semblance of a passing game and finished 8-5.
But a new season means new hope.
The Sooners plucked former Washington State quarterback John Mateer from the transfer portal, alongside his offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle.
On the other side, the Wolverines landed 5-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, the highest-rated offensive commit in the history of Michigan's football program. After bouncing between Davis Warren, Alex Orji and Jack Tuttle a season ago, Underwood's mere presence brings hope for the Wolverines' fan base.
So, which new-look team has it better heading into Week 2 of the 2025 season? We polled our college football writers on the spread and over/under to answer that question. Let's dive into our staff's picks below.
Oklahoma vs. Michigan Spread Pick
Our Spread Pick: Michigan +5.5
The Action team shades a light edge to the Michigan Wolverines covering the spread Saturday night in Norman, Oklahoma.
Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore has done an excellent job getting the Wolverines up when they’re counted out by the markets.
The Wolverines have covered their last three as underdogs. Two of those were outright wins over Alabama and Ohio State, both featuring double-digit point spreads. The other was a near win against Indiana (+14.5), which nearly disrupted the Hoosiers’ unblemished 9-0 record.
Our PRO Projections don’t offer the most massive edge on the Wolverines where bettors should be rushing to lock in a number, but our proprietary data supports the underdog, listing the spread on the other side of 5.5 at Michigan +5.8.
PRO Systems built by director of research Evan Abrams also side with the Wolverines.
One of these models, labeled “Early Road Redemption,” boasting a near 57% win rate, shows that underdogs failing to cover the spread early in the season are often bounce-back candidates under certain conditions.
Michigan, which won but didn’t cover last weekend vs. UNLV, fits the bill.
Underwood does have a tall task playing in Norman, but his upside is uncanny. At +5.5, with a relatively low total, we’ll side with the Wolverines covering.
Oklahoma vs. Michigan Over/Under Pick
Over 44.5 | 4 Picks |
Pass | 1 Pick |
Under 44.5 | 5 Picks |
Our Over/Under Pick: Under 44.5
After a 60% vote on the Wolverines to cover, the conviction level drops a bit in regard to the total, with another small edge on the under.
The talk all week will be on the quarterbacks, but both the Wolverines and Sooners feature strong defenses.
The defensive-minded Brent Venables has a unit full of veterans to spearhead a potential deep run in the SEC this season.
The headline of last week’s FCS tune-up wasn’t quarterback John Mateer beginning his Heisman campaign with dazzling numbers, but instead a defense that allowed just 3.3 yards per play and a 1-of-11 conversion rate on third down.
Crowd noise will also be a huge factor Saturday night for Underwood, given the high-stakes environment and prime-time atmosphere.
When it comes to past results, Michigan went over the total last weekend in a 34-17 win against New Mexico. Oklahoma, meanwhile, sailed under the closing total of 61 in a 35-3 win over Illinois State.
This total opened at 47.5 and is only cratering. PRO Projections support a low-scoring game, making the fair total more like 44.
