UCLA Bruins Betting Preview: All Eyes on 9
When you start to evaluate the 2026 UCLA Bruins, you have to start with Nico Iamaleava.
He is probably the most physically gifted player on the roster, and the once-heralded former Tennessee Volunteer has had an up-and-down college career.
Last season he threw for nearly 2,000 yards while also leading the Bruins in rushing, in what was a difficult year for UCLA given all of the staff turnover and early-season struggles.
If UCLA is to take a major step forward this season, Iamaleava will need to play to his potential, showcase the big arm he has, and make smarter decisions with the football.
It will be a brand new system for the Bruins once again, with Bob Chesney taking over as HC.
Chesney comes over from James Madison, where he did an admirable job replacing Curt Cignetti, most notably taking the Dukes to the CFP a year ago.
OC Dean Kennedy's system should fit Iamaleava pretty well, but it will likely take a bit of time to find rhythm, which makes a road opener all the more challenging.
This is also a roster with a ton of new faces across the board, so it's difficult to predict how exactly the Bruins will look given there will be a chunk of starters on both sides of the ball who were not in Los Angeles a season ago.
I've got more confidence in the offense being able to perform early with the experience of Iamaleava, but I've got real concerns about the UCLA defense.
Cal has a ton of talent offensively, and they will pose a lot of challenges that I don't think this Bruin defense will necessarily be ready for.
Cal Golden Bears Betting Preview: Defensive Wild Card
Speaking of staff changes, the Justin Wilcox era is over in Berkeley, and in comes Tosh Lupoi.
Lupoi is an alum of the program, which is probably what Cal needed to reinvigorate some juice into the fanbase.
The other good news for the Golden Bears? They were able to cough up enough cash to retain star sophomore QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.
Sagapolutele is uber-talented, and in his freshman season, he had plenty of 'Wow' moments with absurd highlight reel throws under duress.
Cal's OL play really struggled last year, making it more difficult for him, and he was careless with the ball at times, but I was still really impressed with most of the tape the true freshman put out.
Thanks to the portal, the Offensive Line should be much better in 2026, which is significant.
For my money, Sagapolutele is a top-10 quarterback in the country, and his presence coupled with an injection of WR talent from the transfer portal should make the Golden Bears one of the more explosive offenses in the ACC.
On the other side of the ball, it will come down to whether or not the portal additions hit.
Cal lost a lot of defensive talent from a year ago, and has very few returning snaps from last season on the roster.
Getting some pressure on Iamaleava early on in this one, as well as forcing a turnover or two, will go a long way in helping the Golden Bears get the win on Saturday night.
UCLA vs Cal Pick, Betting Analysis
This is an old-fashioned Pac-12 After Dark battle on Saturday night in Berkeley, and I couldn't be more excited about it.
In my opinion, these two teams should still be in the same conference, but this is a non-conference affair that will draw plenty of interested eyeballs in California.
Give me the team that is at home, has the best player on the field, and is catching a point-and-a-half to get it done and cover this spread.
Sagapolutele should be able to make plenty of plays in the passing game against a UCLA defense that I am frankly not sold on.
Cal improved its skill pieces in the transfer portal, and I think you will see those additions pay off early and often in this one.
California should also be able to have plenty of success on the ground, which will force the Bruins to throw more guys in the box and be vulnerable in the back end.
UCLA will score plenty to keep this contest close, but I like the Golden Bears to do just enough to win outright and cover as a tiny dog in the process.
