In an intensifying effort to secure better wages and working conditions, hotel and casino workers rallied recently in Elk Grove.
This gathering was part of a wider campaign to push for union representation at Sky River Casino, a gaming establishment operated by the Wilton Rancheria tribe in collaboration with Boyd Gaming.
Over 100 casino workers and supporters congregated to present worker-signed petitions demanding that the tribe acknowledge the union as the official representative for the casino employees.
Ironically, all of the tension is being felt at a time when the casino just paid out a massive slot machine jackpot. And it comes as casino workers in Indianapolis are putting up a similar fight.
What Lies at The Heart of the Sky River Casino Dispute?
At the heart of this organizing drive is a legal conflict between Unite Here Local 49, the union representing the workers, and the Wilton Rancheria.
The disagreement is about whether workers at Sky River Casino, which is on tribal land, can join a union. Workers say they aren't being paid as well as people at other unionized casinos in Northern California.
They want better pay and benefits to be on par with what other casinos offer. The main things workers at Sky River Casino want are for their union, Unite Here Local 49, to be officially recognized and for their pay and benefits to match those of nearby unionized casinos.
Many workers believe the current pay and conditions at Sky River Casino aren't as good as at other unionized places.

Sky River Casino Continues Expansion Plan

- Entertainment Venues
Yet, union organizers are quick to point out the disparities between the current employment practices at Sky River and those of unionized casinos in the region.
They argue that, while the expansion promises growth, it should accompany fair labor practices that respect the workers’ rights to improved conditions and job security.
The expansion is expected to be finished by 2027.
