Eagles vs Bears Monday Night Football Preview
The Eagles are off to a 2-0 start to the season, which you will never complain about in the NFL. Oddly enough, the Eagles are only the 5th team in NFL history to start 2-0 without a takeaway.
However, those victories came against the Titans and Commanders by a combined six points. There are many issues with this Philadelphia team at the moment.
Let's start with the offense, which has experienced expected growing pains in the first year of another new offensive coordinator. The interior offensive line is an absolute mess, which is creating problems in pass protection and the running game.
Through two games, Philadelphia ranked dead last in yards before contact per rush and in yards per play on first down. If we just isolate the more predictive early downs, only Minnesota had a lower Success Rate through the first two weeks.
Philly has barely squeaked by its first two opponents, in large part due to some extreme late-down fortune (top-5 in pretty much every category), which is extremely alarming with such poor metrics on early downs. Ranking dead last on yards per play on first down and first on third downs raises all kinds of red flags after playing the Titans and Commanders.
AJ Brown is definitely missed on the outside, and Dallas Goedert (who almost single-handedly won the Commanders game) will miss this game with an injury.
Look, the Bears defense is atrocious. I don't have many positive things to say about that unit, but I have similar sentiments about the first two defenses the Eagles faced — and they didn't necessarily light the world on fire.
Eagles vs Bears Prediction, Betting Analysis
I do fully trust this Eagles defense under Vic Fangio, but it's definitely been a slow start to the season, especially from a pressure perspective. I did not envision Philly's defense ranking dead last in time to pressure through two weeks. They should be fine over the course of the season, but something has been just a bit off.
So, can the Bears take advantage with a backup quarterback? It's been a whirlwind for Chicago at that position over the past week.
With Caleb Williams nursing an injury, Tyson Bagent was the presumed next man up, but he suffered a concussion. He did eventually get cleared, but Ben Johnson is still deciding to roll with 38-year-old Case Keenum since he got most of the reps during the week and was fully part of the game prep.
What are we going to get from Keenum tonight? Your guess is as good as mine. He hasn't thrown a meaningful pass in an NFL regular season game since 2023, so it could very well go completely sideways from the jump. He did at least look crisp in the preseason this summer (25-40 fr 354 yards with 2 TD-0 INT), but I wouldn't overweight those three meaningless games.
Can Keenum be Ben Johnson's "Jared Goff-Lite" for a night and run the offense, primarily leaning on the run game and play-action with the occasional deep shot? I believe so. Johnson did carve up this Eagles defense last year with the run in a road upset win.
Ultimately, I'm going to trust Johnson to scheme up enough to keep the Bears offense on schedule against a struggling Philadelphia run defense. Anything over a field goal is worth a bet on the Bears in my opinion, but I certainly wouldn't go crazy on the side with a third-string quarterback at the helm.
Pick: Bears +3.5 (-105)
