As of this weekend, the Polymarket prediction market for the Nevada gubernatorial race had Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo leading with 51% implied odds. Just 48 hours later, Democratic candidate Aaron Ford flipped the race and now leads with a 55% chance of winning the election.
The battle to become Nevada’s next governor has been marked by sharp swings and volatility, but this plot twist less than a month before the election could be an indicator of underlying trends in this key swing state.
In this article, we’ll analyze the market dynamics and what drove traders to shift their outlook. Before we jump in, we invite you to use our Polymarket promo code and download the Action Network App, where you’ll find all the latest updates and insights.
The Nevada Odds
Over the past few days, Aaron Ford has taken the lead on the Polymarket trading board. The momentum for the Democratic candidate, current Nevada Attorney General and former Majority Leader of the Nevada State Senate, began on Friday and hasn't stopped since. This market shift finally aligns with what state polling has been pointing to for some time: that in the gubernatorial race, the blue team holds the edge.
Lombardo, former sheriff of Clark County and current governor of the state, lost the lead he had held since September 24th, sparking deep concern across the Republican camp.
Reasons Behind the Market Shift
There is no single trigger explaining the shift in sentiment among Polymarket traders. As noted above, the adjustment in prediction markets arrived several days after pollsters such as Emerson College showed Ford leading in the polls by at least two percentage points.
Other polls positioned him with a four-point advantage over the incumbent governor, a gap that seems to be widening day by day as we approach November 3rd.
The trading board also reflects a growing sense that voters are dissatisfied with the final stretch of Lombardo’s term as governor. The rising cost of living and higher production costs have taken a toll on local families and business owners alike, and it is precisely through these cracks that Ford seems to be thriving.
In several of his public speeches and press conferences, Ford took aim at the underperformance of the Nevada Small Business Loan Program, pointing out that very few loans were issued over the past year, which stagnated the local economy. Ultimately, the Democratic challenger held Lombardo accountable for these structural shortcomings.
What to Expect Heading into the Election
We cannot forget that Nevada is a historically volatile state due to its high proportion of independent voters and split tickets. With less than a month until the election, news regarding campaign ad spending, ground-game mobilization, or local debates can trigger massive movements in prediction markets.
So far, proposals for public debates have failed to materialize, and there is no sign this will change anytime soon. In this climate, Republicans recognize that a debate could backfire, choosing instead to rely on Lombardo's campaign speeches and the power of incumbency to run an efficient push in the remaining days.
For now, Ford's Yes shares continue to climb, and we may well see a steady surge throughout the week as prediction markets react to live incoming data.
