The polling numbers in Iowa are sounding alarm bells for the Republican Party. With Republican Governor Kim Reynolds stepping down, the door swung open for Democrats, who have fully capitalized on the chance to flip a state that has leaned steadily red for years. On one side stands Democratic candidate Rob Sand; on the other, Republican Zach Lahn.

Both polling data and prediction markets point to a steep uphill battle for Republicans. In response, Trump has launched a high-stakes rescue campaign to boost Lahn, dangling promises of a $15 billion steel mill among other pledges to shore up support.

Let's dive into this market to see what impact this strategy could have with just one month to go until Election Day.

The Iowa Odds

On Kalshi, traders are signaling a clear picture: Democratic candidate Rob Sand holds a commanding lead over his opponent, Zach Lahn, with an 84% implied probability. Sand even surged to an all-time high in recent days, at least across prediction markets.

While Iowa typically leans Republican, a cluster of national headwinds has converged to undermine Lahn’s chances.

The Reasons Behind the Democratic Surge

To put this in perspective, Trump carried Iowa by 13 percentage points just two years ago, but the political landscape has shifted dramatically, especially across the Midwest. In that region, Trump’s war with Iran has sent gas and diesel prices soaring, weighing heavily on manufacturer budgets while squeezing household finances.

Republican leadership across the region raised red flags over this shift, warning that economic headwinds and a deteriorating local image would trigger a severe backlash in the midterms.

Conservative talk radio host Steve Deace warned Republicans that “this might end up being an even worse midterm environment than 2006,” a year in which Democrats gained six Senate seats and 31 House seats to take majorities in both chambers.

With all these fires to put out, Trump took matters into his own hands.

The Rescue Plan

The GOP understands all too well that it cannot afford to lose strongholds like Iowa. With just one month left before Election Day, the party is set to deploy its full war chest and resources to turn the tide in key contests, most notably the gubernatorial race, where Zach Lahn currently trails.

Against this emergency backdrop, current Governor Kim Reynolds called the Republican-led state legislature into a special session to address several of the flagship proposals outlined by Trump.

President Donald Trump unveiled an ambitious proposal during an Oval Office press briefing: the construction of a massive steel mill in eastern Iowa, a multi-billion-dollar project slated to generate thousands of regional jobs and deliver a much-needed economic surge to an area reeling from rising living and energy costs.

The Steel Mill Effect

The steel mill announcement caught Democrats and Republicans alike off guard, injecting a sudden jolt of volatility into the gubernatorial race. The promise of creating 1,750 permanent jobs, alongside 6,000 temporary construction positions, serves as a major wild card whose impact will unfold over the coming weeks.

To seal the playbook, Trump announced a high-profile rally in Iowa for the final stretch of his candidates' campaign.

The same week as Trump’s announcement, the GOP’s super PAC, the Senate Leadership Fund, unveiled an additional $20 million investment in Iowa to bolster US Rep. Ashley Hinson’s Senate campaign. That pushes total GOP spending in the state past $100 million as polls indicate Hinson remains in a neck-and-neck battle with Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek.

Only time will tell if this last-minute strategy can turn the tide on what is shaping up to be a brutally tough election for Republicans.
