With Major League Baseball not starting its season until July 23 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's Fourth of July weekend seemed like it would be a boring day for U.S. bettors.

But here's a savory treat: For the first time ever, it will be legal for sportsbooks in New Jersey, Colorado and New Hampshire to offer betting odds on the Hot Dog Eating Contest, which will take place on Saturday.

As expected, Joey Chestnut — the Michael Jordan of eating — is a massive -1000 favorite to win his 13th hot dog title (was -835 on July 1). He's won in 12 of the past 13 years; his only loss was in 2015 when Matt Stonie stole the throne. Chestnut took back the title in 2016 and has won every year since.

Bettors at DraftKings can also bet on the over/under of hot dogs Chestnut will consume in the contest:

  • Over 72.5 hot dogs: -182
  • Under 72.5 hot dogs: +140

For reference, Chestnut won last year with 71 hot dogs in the allotted 10 minutes. He holds the current world record of 74, which he achieved in 2018.

That's not the only hot dog contest of the day, though. There's a women's hot dog eating contest as well, featuring another large favorite.

Miki Sudo has been nearly as dominant as Chestnut, winning all six events she's participated in since 2014. She's currently a -835 favorite to retain her title, with the field listed at 5/1 odds.

There's also an over/under for the number of hot dogs she'll eat:

  • Over 40.5 hot dogs: -162
  • Under 40.5 hot dogs: +125

The current world record at this event belongs to Sonya Thomas, who ate 45 hot dogs in 10 minutes back in 2012. Sudo's personal best was 41 in 2017; she won last year with 31 hot dogs eaten.
