Monday CFB – No. 19 SMU at Florida State

Florida State seemed to pick up where they left off last season. The Seminoles beat New Mexico State 34-17 while laying 32.5 points, took seven penalties, and let a Conference USA offense convert 10 of 17 third downs.
Ashton Daniels, the graduate transfer who started two years at Stanford before a half-season at Auburn, went 17-of-27 for 202 yards with a touchdown and a bad interception. The ground game was the bright spot; however, Ousmane Kromah ripped a 52-yard run on his way to 114 yards, Samuel Singleton Jr. added 42 rushing yards and four catches for 54 and a score, and FSU ran 39 times for 217 yards behind a line breaking in five new starters.
SMU has the better roster shockingly. Rhett Lashlee is 38-16 overall and 27-5 in conference play, coming off a 9-4 season and a Holiday Bowl win over Arizona. Kevin Jennings returns for his senior year after 3,641 yards and 26 touchdowns on 66% passing, with 19 career wins as a starter and a finger issue that cost him offseason reps but has him throwing again. SMU won the only prior meeting 42-16, and Florida State has lost 11 of its last 13 conference games.
