Pick: Lakers +5 (1u) | Lakers ML (0.5u)

Here's everything you need to know about Lakers vs 76ers on Monday, Nov. 27 — our expert prediction and betting picks for today.

The Lakers will travel to Philadelphia to play the 76ers Monday night and both teams are coming off of big road wins against playoff caliber opponents.

Philadelphia won a tight one in Oklahoma City 127-123 and it looked like the Thunder might come back similarly to their win against the Warriors with Chet Holmgren making some big shots down the stretch. But the size and strength of the 76ers proved too much for OKC’s defense. Joel Embiid nearly had a triple double, racking up 35 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists with four blocks and a steal.

Meanwhile, the Lakers find themselves off an impressive win of their own, spoiling Donovan Mitchell’s first game back from injury on Saturday night with a 121-115 win over the Cavaliers. The good news is for L.A. that even with a rough shooting night from LeBron James (8-23 FG), they were still able to get the win thanks to 32 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and five stocks (steals + blocks) from Anthony Davis.

Let's get to our Lakers vs 76ers prediction and pick.

Lakers vs 76ers Prediction

Pick: Lakers +5 (1u) | Lakers ML (0.5u)

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers have gotten off to a much better start through 17 games compared to last season thanks to a concerted effort by James and the Lakers to start their 2023-24 campaign strong. Despite making the Western Conference Finals, the Lakers started just 2-9 last season and were 6-11 at this time last November.

Their success has come despite injuries from rotation players Cam Reddish, Gabe Vincent and Rui Hachimura, with the Lakers winning seven of their last nine, and all three of their road games in that span. Understandably for an older team like the Lakers, both their losses came on the second night of a back-to-back to Western Conference rivals Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings—two teams with playoff aspirations.

This recent good play by the Lakers isn’t just a random sample size. Darvin Ham has made a significant modification to their lineup and rotations and it’s paid off handsomely—especially on the offensive end.

After a blowout 128-94 loss to the Rockets on Nov. 8 (albeit without Davis), Ham decided to bring Lakers guard Austin Reaves off the bench and play more minutes with the second unit. The result has been a +4.1-point difference in Offensive Rating and a -2.9-point defensively, catapulting them from 16th in Net Rating (+.5) to second since making the change (+7.5).

Philadelphia 76ers

The 76ers have also improved on last season's start. They're 11-5 compared to their 10-9 record at this point last November. Tyrese Maxey has started his ascension to stardom, averaging 26.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.8 assists. But he’s not just checking the boxes for traditional stat counters. The advanced stats agree. Maxey is 22nd in the league in Estimated Plus-Minus (+3.5) per Cleaning the Glass and 17th in Box Plus-Minus per Basketball Reference. Both stats have a high correlation in predicting MVP winners.

While he’s not an MVP candidate, the fact that Maxey is in the top-25 is notable and people are certainly taking note as he’s the odds-on favorite for Most Improved Player. He's a big reason for Philly's improved success in addition to the MVP-level play of reigning award-winner, Joel Embiid.

Although the 76ers have fallen somewhat lately. In their last 10 games, they're 6-4 straight up, but they’re not blowing teams out like they did to start the season, going just 5-5 ATS in that time. A lapse in defense has caused Philadelphia’s Net Rating to slip from +12.6 through the first six games, to +2.7 since then.

Philadelphia has dominated this matchup lately, winning nine of the last 10 meetings and going 7-3 ATS in the process. However, the Lakers have shown some punch in the recent head-to-head meetings, covering two of the past three games, with their one spread loss coming in overtime.

Based on how these two teams are playing, five points is too many to lay for a Philly team that’s played four of their last five games on the road. The Lakers had a three-game home stretch prior to Saturday’s win and they’re a team that benefits from extended rest. I like the Lakers +5 and I’d take them down to +3, as well as a sprinkle on the moneyline.
