Technically, the Mavericks still have a shot chance to improve upon their seeding. If they win this game and win twice more this week while the Jazz lose their finale, Dallas could improve to the 6-seed, which may mean avoiding the Clippers in the first round, though even that is not locked in.
But for all those contingencies, Dallas does not appear to have any intention of trying in this game as it will sit Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis and Dorian Finney-Smith with injuries, aka rest. You don’t need me to tell you the Mavs won’t be very good without those three.
As for Utah? Their motivation is a bit muddier, and they’re listing Donovan Mitchell as questionable with a lower leg injury. Dallas doesn’t care to win this game. Does Utah?
You can throw all your Mavericks data out the window with no Doncic or Porzingis. Dallas is not the best offense in league history without those two, I can promise you that much. Dallas played three games all season with both of its stars out and went 2-1, but those games were against Atlanta (twice) and Charlotte — not much of a data point.
Remember, Dallas is already missing Dwight Powell and Jalen Brunson, and Dorian Finney-Smith is its best perimeter defender. We’re looking at a starting five of something like Delon Wright, Seth Curry, Tim Hardaway Jr., Maxi Kleber and Boban Marjanovic. And as good as Rudy Gobert is, we can’t even hope for a Boban smash game.
We’ll see if Donovan Mitchell plays this one. If he does, Utah should roll to a double-digit victory with ease.
If Spida sits, this gets much more interesting. Don’t forget, the Jazz are missing Bojan Bogdanovic too, so that’s a whole lot of offense and initiation missing, maybe even more than Dallas is missing. But it does still leave Mike Conley and Joe Ingles, with Gobert and Royce O’Neale providing the defense. That’s arguably four better players than anyone Dallas will play.
Gobert should handle any Boban X-factor, and O’Neale can check onto Hardaway or Curry if they get hot. This might look like more of an old school grind-it-out-on-D win for Utah, but a win is a win.
Betting Analysis & Pick
There’s always the chance Mitchell does sit this one out, and maybe Utah comes out flat and unmotivated.
But I’m not convinced even that would matter. The Mavs are just missing too many players here, so unless the Jazz are straight up trying to lose, they should have enough talent left without Mitchell to get the job done.
I’m comfortable laying the 6.5 right now while Mitchell’s status is unclear. Even if he’s out, I’m not sure the line drops much. But if he’s cleared to play, that line could get a little too close to double-digits to provide much value. Grab the Jazz and count on them to take care of business in a game that ultimately doesn’t matter a ton for either team.
