The UtahJazz head East to take on the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night in what should be an interesting game. These two teams were involved in one of the biggest trades of the offseason, as Donovan Mitchell moved from Utah to Cleveland in exchange for Collin Sexton, Lauri Markkanen and a treasure chest of first round draft picks.
Kelly Olynyk (30% opening-tip win rate) is questionable with an ankle injury tonight, but assuming he plays he will be jumping at center against Jarrett Allen (75% win rate). These two players have not faced each other in the past two seasons on an opening-tip. In the event that Olynyk doesn't start, Walker Kessler (0-2 in opening-tips this season) would likely get the start.
The Cavs have scored first this season 52% of the time while the Jazz score first just 31% of the time. The Jazz allow opposing centers and power forwards to score first team field goal 62% of the time this season. Looking at recent trends, the opposing center has scored the first team field goal in eight of the past 13 games against the Jazz.
While that data points in Allen's direction here, its hard to ignore the revenge factor in this one for Mitchell. Mitchell has taken the first team shot in 37% of games he started this season.
