Betting Analysis

Matt Moore — I’m trying very hard not to be suckered in by what the Hawks showed in that play-in win over the Heat. That was literally the hardest I’ve seen Atlanta try this season. Not in a while. Not in a play-in game. This entire season. They moved the ball, they were physical, and they dominated Miami on the glass.

They have so much talent. Trae Young orchestrating. Dejounte Murray slicing and occasionally hitting 3s, which are huge edges for Atlanta. John Collins’ versatility. DeAndre Hunter as a big wing that can handle. Clint Capela dominant on the glass. Onyeka Okongwu as a switch-all smallball weapon. Bogdan Bogdanovic as a bench weapon.

I just don’t think it matters here. The Celtics are very similar to the Heat team of a year ago that dismantled the Hawks after they won the play-in tournament. The Heat shut down the Hawks with switches and beat them with physicality. The Heat, for some reason, went away from switch in the play-in game to elect for drop, which Young eats against. The Celtics will play some of that, but they will switch consistently, which throws him off — and once Young is off, they struggle.

Boston allows the lowest opponent offensive rebound rate in the league. They will not be out-hustled, they will not be out-toughed, they will not be out-muscled. They shoot volume 3s which will take away the Hawks’ strength of offensive firepower, and unlike the Heat, they can hit water if they fell out of a boat with jumpers.

Shot variance for Boston is wide. The Hawks may wind up taking two games in this series, but the price isn’t good enough now. Wait for a Boston Game 1 win, and then find an angle to play the Hawks at a long number, but don’t bet them to win the series. Boston will advance to Round 2.
