Alabama vs Auburn College Basketball Betting Preview

Alabama Basketball

Nate Oats has done a tremendous job building a program in Tuscaloosa that's now a consistent Final Four threat seemingly every season.

The Tide haven't been quite as consistent this season, but they're once again elite on the offensive end.

Alabama ranks third nationally in KenPom's adjusted offensive efficiency rankings and once again has a bunch of different weapons that can make shots from deep and also get to the rim.

Aden Holloway has made significant strides in his second year in Oats' system and is dynamic with the ball in his hands.

What's held Alabama back in a lot of games this season is a lack of consistency on the defensive end.

In their last four losses to Vanderbilt, Texas, Tennessee and Florida, the Tide have allowed an average of 92 points per game and have looked downright uninterested at times.

Opponents have been able to get into their sets in the half-court with next to zero resistance and are also having success attacking the offensive glass.

The Tide rank outside the top 200 in field goal percentage defense and outside the top 350 nationally in forcing turnovers.

That is a major cause for concern against an Auburn team that can really score it, particularly in its own building.

If Oats' team wants to get the road win over its rival, the defense must improve considerably, and the Tide will need to shoot the ball at a high clip.

Auburn Basketball

Steven Pearl has done a phenomenal job following in his father's footsteps in year one at Auburn.

The Tigers played a really challenging non-conference schedule, which allowed the team to be tested right out of the gates.

They took some punches in blowout losses to heavyweights Purdue, Arizona and Michigan, but they were better off for having played those games.

They also beat St. John's and NC State, two wins that continue to age well as Selection Sunday approaches.

Tahaad Pettiford is a junkyard dog type of point guard who's never afraid of the moment and made plenty of big shots for last season's Final Four team.

Transfers Keyshawn Hall and Kevin Overton have proven to be great lands by Pearl in the portal, and Kaden Magwood continues to make strides in his freshman season.

Auburn has won four of its last five in large part due to an increased level of intensity on the defensive end.

The Tigers held South Carolina, Ole Miss and Florida all under 70 points and won on the backboards in those games, as well.

To beat a very talented Alabama team on Saturday, Auburn needs to continue to guard hard and make the Tide work on every possession.

Oats coached teams that always shoot a lot of 3s, so protecting the arc will also be paramount.

Alabama vs. Auburn Betting Analysis

Auburn has quietly been playing as well as just about any team in the SEC over the last couple of weeks, and Alabama continues to struggle away from its own building.

As a result, I'm backing the Tigers at home in this one as a short favorite.

Neville Arena should be jumping for this one against the in-state rival, and I think you'll see Auburn come out with its hair on fire right from the jump.

Alabama is too good of an offensive team not to have a couple of runs in this one, but the Tigers' defense and physicality will be able to disrupt some of the Tide's rhythm.

Finally, Action Network's Evan Abrams has a strong return on investment Sports Insights Bet Labs featured system called "Good Team, Conference, Small Favorite, Both Teams Bad ATS" that says this pick is a strong value.

This Auburn/Bama hoops rivalry has really grown over the last five-to-six years, and I expect another classic on Saturday.

I'm rolling with the home team to win and cover.

My Pick: Auburn -2.5
