Arizona State Basketball

It's been a very up-and-down season for Arizona State, as it has a 16-14 record heading into this Saturday duel.

Leading the way for the Sun Devils' offense is senior guard Moe Odum, who's posting over 17 points per game.

The Sun Devils' backcourt boasts a ton of experience with Anthony Johnson playing alongside Odom. In his final collegiate season, the Arizona State shooting guard is scoring over 13 points per game this season.

Bobby Hurley’s experienced backcourt lead a Sun Devils offense that's scoring nearly 78 points per game this season and ranks inside the top 65 in offensive efficiency rating, per KenPom.

Arizona State’s frontcourt is also making a major impact on both ends of the floor, with 7-foot-1 freshman Massamba Diop posting 14-point, seven-rebound figures.

The center has arguably made more of an impact than any other player on the roster, as Diop’s length and athleticism have made him an elite rim protector.

While Arizona State’s defense was largely mediocre for the first few months of the season, allowing its opponents to score 75 points per game, Hurley’s defensive unit has improved substantially, allowing opponents to score just 65 points over the last 10 games.

In just his fifth season at the helm, Iowa State head coach T.J. Otzelberger is set to notch his fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Per ESPN Bracketologist Joe Lunardi, Iowa State currently projects to be a No. 2 seed in the Big Dance.

While Otzelberger is largely praised for his prowess as a defensive mastermind, Iowa State’s offense has thrived thanks to the exceptional play of its three leaders: Milan Momcilovic, Joshua Jefferson and Tamin Lipsey.

Momcilovic (17.5 PPG) is the leading scorer for a Cyclones offense that's scoring nearly 83 points per game. The junior is one of the best 3-point shooters in the country, converting at an exceptional 51% clip from deep.

Jefferson rounds out a loaded Iowa State frontcourt, with the senior posting nearly 17 points.

Meanwhile, Lipsey is in his fourth season in Ames, and is the heart of this Iowa State squad on both ends of the floor.

Otzelberger’s offensive philosophy emphasizes spacing, interior passes and deliberate half-court sets, which have resulted in an extremely well-balanced offensive machine.

In the half-court, Iowa State frequently uses screens to create efficient scoring opportunities in the paint, while also forcing defensive shifts that open passing lanes for its perimeter players cutting to the basket.

Iowa State is recording an impressive 83 points per contest and ranks in the top 15 nationally in offensive efficiency rating per, KenPom.

To not much surprise, Otzelberger’s defensive unit is allowing its opponents to score just 65 points of offense, maintaining a double-digit scoring margin.

The Cyclones’ relentless, high-pressure defensive style is an Otzelberger staple, and it's largely the reason he was hired. Per Haslametrics, Iowa State has the eighth-most efficient defense in the country.

Arizona State vs. Iowa State Betting Analysis

While the Sun Devils have a lot of experience on their roster and have been rather impressive on the defensive end of the floor over the last few weeks, Iowa State is just the far better team in this matchup.

Hilton Coliseum is extremely difficult for road teams to find success at, and I expect more of the same on Saturday afternoon. The Cyclones are skidding to close their regular season schedule, and this is a prime opportunity to bounce back on their home floor prior to the Big 12 tournament.

Given Iowa State is coming off consecutive defeats, I expect it to come out hot in the first 20 minutes of the game, determined to make a statement after its recent disappointing results.

I love the Cyclones in this bounce back spot, so I'll back them on the first-half spread.

My Pick: Iowa State 1H ATS
