Arkansas vs LSU College Basketball Betting Preview
Arkansas Basketball
Arkansas is 17-6 on the year and right in the thick of the race for an SEC regular-season title, just one game behind first-place Florida with a 7-3 record in league play.
The main story with this Arkansas team has been the play of Darius Acuff, who has established himself as one of the best point guards in the country.
Acuff has scored 17-plus points in every game since Thanksgiving, has four games with double-digit assists, and is shooting 42% from deep.
The Hogs are shooting 37.4% from 3-point land as a team, with Meleek Thomas, Trevon Brazile and Karter Knox joining Acuff in shooting over 38% while each having at least26 makes from deep.
The Razorbacks own the seventh-most efficient offense in the country, per KenPom.
This is an extremely athletic team that gets up and down the floor, playing at the 30th fastest tempo nationally.
Arkansas is a bit thinner than usual right now. Head coach John Calipari has stuck with a tight eight-man rotation all season, but Knox and D.J. Wagner didn’t play on Saturday and are questionable for this one.
That forced Cal to dig a little deeper, giving freshman Isaiah Sealy his first real run of the year in the 20-point win over Mississippi State. Sealy responded with six points and three blocks off the bench.
Defensively, this group checks in at 58th on KenPom for the season, with its strengths coming at the rim and at the free-throw line. Arkansas ranks 30th nationally in block rate and 44th in foul rate.
LSU Basketball
LSU peaked at 24th on KenPom during nonconference play, taking care of business against lesser competition. Fast forward to early February, and the Tigers are now 14-9 on the season and 2-8 in SEC play.
This league is absolutely loaded, and Matt McMahon’s seat is warming up in Year 4, as LSU is once again not close to at-large contention.
The season has clearly turned since Dedan Thomas Jr. went down with a foot injury. LSU was 12-1 before losing its best player. After a 1-4 stretch without him, Thomas returned for three games but didn’t look close to 100%, and LSU lost all three.
He has now missed the last two games and is questionable again here with the nagging injury. Without a healthy Thomas, the Tigers are limited offensively and don’t offer much resistance on the defensive end either.
During SEC play, LSU grades out in the bottom four in the league on both sides of the ball. On the season, LSU is one of just two SEC defenses ranking outside the top 100 nationally.
Max Mackinnon, Mike Nwoko and Marquel Sutton all average between 13 and 15 points per game on the season.
Mackinnon is a sniper, shooting 40% from deep on the year, even while being forced into tougher looks without Thomas. Nwoko is a beast on the interior, though his production has been inconsistent.
Sutton is a matchup problem at 6-foot-9 and 225 pounds. He's a tough finisher who can put the ball on the floor, but the outside shot hasn’t been there, as he’s shooting under 28% on 87 attempts from deep.
Arkansas vs LSU Pick, Betting Analysis
Arkansas lost three of its first four road games on the season, but it has shown improvement.
The Razorbacks have won their last two over Oklahoma and Mississippi State. Those are two of the most getable road games on the SEC slate, as is this one against the Tigers.
I don’t expect Thomas to play here the way this situation has been treated, and if he does play, I wouldn’t expect him to be at 100%.
LSU’s last home game came against a fast-paced team that was just flat out better, as Georgia won by a score of 83-71. Mackinnon and Sutton combined for 40 of LSU’s 71 points.
Even if Knox and Wagner don’t go here, I definitely side with the Razorbacks here. With the way Arkansas takes care of the ball and the way Acuff has been playing, I don’t expect LSU to have enough to get it done at home.
My Pick: Arkansas -5.5 (Play to -6.5)
