Arkansas vs Texas Tech College Basketball Betting Preview
Arkansas Basketball
Arkansas finally turned some heads with a huge win over Louisville in Fayetteville last week. Now the Razorbacks are 7-2 and sit at 29th in KenPom.
The Razorbacks have only faced three high-major foes this season (Michigan State, Duke, Louisville), against whom they've gone 1-2.
The biggest takeaway is that Arkansas’ elite defense (which ranks 25th in defensive efficiency) took a step back with a leap in competition. That’s not groundbreaking; you play better teams and it’s tougher. The Razorbacks allowed 1.00 PPP or more in all three games.
Notably, all three teams shot 51% or better from inside the arc. For the season, Arkansas is holding teams to 49% on 2s.
Offensively, the Razorbacks' pair of gifted freshman guards (Meleek Thomas, Darius Acuff Jr.) are the clear go-to options. Acuff leads Arkansas with 17.4 points and 5.4 assists per game, while shooting 42% from deep. Thomas isn’t far behind, averaging 16.9 points, but he’s shooting just 40% from the field and 34% from deep.
Only one other Arkansas player (Trevon Brazile) averages double-digit points. Five other players average between five and eight points, and players like Karter Knox and Billy Richmond III have the upside to score more.
But I'm a bit worried about where the scoring comes from if Acuff and Thomas struggle.
Arkansas ranks 46th in offensive efficiency. It also shoots 35.5% from 3 (98th) and 54.9% from 2 (99th).
Perhaps the biggest issue for Arkansas is rebounding. It surrendered 12 or more offensive rebounds in all three high-major games. The Razorbacks rank 182nd in offensive rebounding rate and 142nd in defensive rebounding rate, so the glass is a concern.
Texas Tech Basketball
Texas Tech lost some of its luster as a potential top-10 team when Purdue crushed it by 30 on a neutral court. In all, the Red Raiders are 7-2, with their losses coming to Purdue and Illinois.
Beating Arkansas would represent Texas Tech’s best win, as Wake Forest and LSU are currently the top two wins on its resume.
The Red Raiders' offense prefers to work inside and out.
Having a stud big man like JT Toppin (20.8 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 2.4 APG) can be a benefit in multiple ways. He's an elite scorer, as evidenced by his points-per-game numbers. But he can also pass out of double teams, leading to Texas Tech launching 3s on 45% of its possessions.
The Red Raiders shoot 36% from downtown. However, they're shooting just 50% from inside the arc. Part of that is due to roster construction.
Grant McCasland has a pair of bona fide All-American types in Toppin and Christian Anderson (19.1 PPG, 7.0 APG).
LeJuan Watts is the key to turning that around. The 6-foot-6 small ball four is coming off the bench, and he gives Tech its best offense since Toppin can pivot to the five.
Watts is shooting just 43% from the field — down from 54% last year at Wazzu. He'll need to be more efficient for Texas Tech to jump up from 33rd in offensive efficiency.
The shooting is strong — and could get even better. Jaylen Petty and Tyeree Bryan, a pair of rotational pieces eating up 20 minutes a night, are shooting below 30% from 3-point range. Bryan shot 42% from deep at Santa Clara last season, and Petty has just been streaky.
Those two can make the good shooting Red Raiders team into an elite one in a hurry.
Defensively, the Red Raiders continue to thrive under a defensive-minded coach in McCasland. They rank 20th in defensive efficiency. The Red Raiders are terrific at forcing tough isolating buckets, limiting teams to assisted baskets just 37% of the time (second-best nationally).
They also hold teams to 29% from deep, but just 49% from inside the arc.
Arkansas vs. Texas Tech Betting Analysis
I'm backing the Red Raiders here. Riding the high of the win against Louisville, this could be a nice spot to get off the Arkansas train.
For one, it's close to a home game for Texas Tech, taking place in Dallas. The Red Raiders are the better team, in general, due to having a more solidified identity.
We've seen some real dips in level from Arkansas, and playing an elite shooting team with two stars that can also defend at a high level could be tough for Arkansas.
My Pick: Texas Tech -1.5 (Play to -3)
