Auburn vs Oregon College Basketball Betting Preview

Auburn Basketball

Auburn is 4-1 in the first year of the Steven Pearl era, with its lone loss coming by one point to Houston.

Keep an eye on injuries, though. Leading scorer Keyshawn Hall is questionable after suffering an ankle injury. He made the trip to Vegas, but his status looks murky.

If Hall is out, that makes it even more important for Tahaad Pettiford to bust his sophomore slump. He's entering Vegas averaging 10.2 points per game with troubling shooting splits. Pettiford has to get it rolling for the nation's 19th-most efficient offense on KenPom to reach its ceiling.

The Tigers' dazzling interior will really test Oregon's interior defense. Auburn has a fearsome group of bigs with KeShawn Murphy, Elyjah Freeman and Sebastian Williams-Adams. That group plays a pivotal role in Auburn posting a 44% offensive rebounding rate.

This will be a big test for an Auburn defense with very few tests to date. I grew concerned about Auburn's defense after Bethune-Cookman torched the Tigers for 1.12 PPP on opening night. Since then, things have looked better, and Auburn is 40th in defensive efficiency.

It'll be a real cause for concern if Auburn struggles against this Oregon offense.

Oregon Basketball

Oregon won the inaugural Players Era Festival crown a season ago.

That road will be much tougher based on what Oregon has shown us this season. The Ducks are 4-0, but they came very close to dropping games to Rice and Hawaii. They looked better in their past two games, beating South Dakota State by 14 and Oregon State by 12.

Oregon is more 3-point oriented than usual, attempting treys on 48% of its field goal attempts. The problem is that the Ducks are shooting just 32% from deep.

Additionally, Oregon also turns the ball over 18% of the time (238th nationally) and shoots just 48.7% from 2-point range (250th nationally). The Ducks' woeful offense leaves very little room for optimism.

And it's really a two-man show, as Jackson Shelstad and Nate Bittle both average 18 points per game. Shelstad scored 22 points in his last two games after missing the first game and struggling against Rice.

If Shelstad and Bittle have an off night, where does Dana Altman look for scoring? Takai Simpkins is the only other double-digit scorer. Maybe Kwame Evans Jr. finally lives up to his top-30 recruit potential.

Without Shelstad and Bittle combining for 35-40 points, I don't know how the Ducks compete with Auburn's firepower.

For Dana Altman, the lone bright spot is on the defensive end, where Oregon ranks 28th in efficiency. It's not exactly like the Ducks played the 2016 Golden State Warriors in any of these matchups, though. All of Oregon's first four opponents are outside the top 125 in offensive efficiency.

Still, credit where it's due, as Oregon has done well defending at the hoop while holding teams to 44.1% shooting from 2.

Auburn vs. Oregon Betting Analysis

With the line sitting at -4 in Auburn's favor (as of writing), it likely bakes in Hall being out. If Hall were playing, I would view the line as -6 or so for Auburn.

Still, I trust the Tigers more in this matchup.

The Ducks' lineup is missing a guard to really push them to the next level, and that's not something Coach Altman can fix in November.

He'll need his stars to stand out to have a chance to win, while Auburn can win using its offense or defense.

My Pick: Auburn -4 (Play to -5)
