Cal vs. Georgia Tech College Basketball Betting Preview
Everyone knows that these West Coast ACC and Big Ten teams are going to struggle traveling cross-country in these mega-conferences. As such, the market typically accounts for that.
However, I’m starting to think the market is over-adjusting for those issues, at least when it comes to the Golden Bears.
Cal is now 6-2 ATS on the road this season, and it should be 7-1 ATS if not for a devastating double-overtime seven-point loss to Syracuse as 6.5-point underdogs. The Bears have won three of their past four road games outright, with two of those games coming on the East Coast (Boston College and Miami).
Cal ranks 18th nationally in Haslametrics’ Away From Home metric (+2.30). The Bears have played their best basketball after long plane rides.
Conversely, Georgia Tech is a ridiculous 5-14 ATS at home this year. I don’t even know how that’s possible, but the Yellow Jackets have lost 10 straight games. Damon Stoudamire’s team is in free-fall. They are plagued by turnover issues and don't rebound, so the shot-volume battle is already skewed the other way.
I actually like these Bears. The process is flawed, but Dai Dai Ames and Justin Pippen form a dangerous backcourt.
Most importantly, they’re a pretty good ball-screen coverage unit, which is imperative against Georgia Tech’s downhill PNR-based attack.
Regardless, I project Cal as nearly 5.5-point road favorites on Wednesday. I also hope the Bears bounce back in a big way after Saturday’s pitiful home performance against Pitt.
The Bears already beat the Jackets earlier this season. I'll bank on them doing it again.
My Pick: Cal -3 or Better
