Central Michigan vs South Alabama College Basketball Betting Preview

Central Michigan Basketball

Central Michigan already took down one Sun Belt program, beating Appalachian State, 82-66. The Chippewas followed that impressive win with a 31-point loss to Bradley.

Andy Bronkema will aim to get Central Michigan back on track after a nightmare past few seasons. As time rolls on, Bronkema should bring his winning DNA from Ferris State to Central Michigan, but I don't know if this roster is good enough to compete in the MAC this season.

The main source of struggle is on the offensive end. Central Michigan lacks a clear go-to option to take over games.

Guard Tamario Adley had 22 points against App State, but he scored four points in the Bradley game. He looks like the best option to be "the guy," but he averaged 13.8 points per game and shot 28% from 3 at the Division II level.

Not having shooting is my real worry in this particular matchup. Adley isn't a big shooter, Phat Phat Brooks isn't a shooter and Keenan Garner or Nathan Claerbaut don't bring that skillset either.

The one true shooting option is bench sniper Logan McIntire, and he can be a difference-maker in this matchup.

I just struggle to see how Central Michigan scores against the zone without that outside shotmaking ability. It'll need a real outlier performance from some of its players to beat South Alabama.

South Alabama Basketball

South Alabama is 3-0 to begin the year with a pair of Division I wins over Toledo and Alcorn State. The game against Alcorn was a bit dicey, but the Jaguars' style can lead to funky results.

The Jaguars are heavily centered around the 3-point shot on both ends.

Offensively, the Jags are shooting it less than last year, attempting 3s on 29% of their looks compared to 45% in 2024-25. Does it boil down to a sample size issue? Perhaps, but I think it's more matchup-based. This matchup could be more of a 3-point barrage from Richie Riley’s squad.

I view this South Alabama team more like its 2022-23 team when it had a non-shooting point guard in Isaiah Moore. They have a bigger version of Moore in Chaze Harris, who's 6-foot-6 and can be a total mismatch with his stat-stuffing ability.

The Jaguars have three scorers in Jayden Cooper, Peyton Law and Adam Olsen, who can benefit from Harris’ playmaking.

Law seems like a budding star. He’s averaging 19.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game on 81% shooting. Law could be very tough to defend in this matchup and will shoot it more than he has so far this season.

In their first two games, the Jags allowed 36 and 33 3-point attempts compared to 22 and 19 attempts from inside the arc. Most of this contest will come down to whether Central Michigan can connect from deep.

Central Michigan vs. South Alabama Betting Analysis

I'm a bit shocked to see the line sitting where it is. I expect it to shift more in South Alabama's favor.

Sure, the MAC is a bigger league and Central Michigan beat a proven App State program, but still, you have to think about the matchup.

For one, going on the road for an 11 a.m. ET tip is tough.

Second, Central Michigan will have a brutal time scoring against this South Alabama team, which loves to drag possessions out and make things boring.

The Chips will have to play out of their comfort zone to beat the Jaguars, and I don't think they have enough talent to do so.

My Pick: South Alabama -3.5 (Play to -5.5)
